Rating: - Inspiration to get off the sofa
After a gap of several years I decided to start running again. I started but felt I needed some expert advice to keep me motivated and being a reader I had a look in my local library.
I read several books on running before this one but most were from a male perspective. I was not at the stage of competing but wanted to a book that would take me from the beginning all the way through to competing when I'm ready for that. This IS that book! It covers everything from stretches specific to women and even running through the menopause.
If you are looking for a book to start you off or a good reference book to flick through then I think you'll be hard pushed to find a better one. A couple of months in and I'm still running ... Read More:
Rating: - Rather disappointing
There's some good stuff in the 'motivation' section, but other than that this wasn't helpful for me. Too much focus on carrying rape alarms, periods, choosing a pair of shoes, and so on. Not enough practical stuff such as training programmes.
Rating: - Well worth buying
I bought this about 6 months ago when having hauled my rather overweight backside off the sofa for the first time in 5 years I decided it was high time I got fit and lost weight. This book has been invaluable to me. I had never run anywhere (apart from in PE at school 20 years ago and I hated it even then!) so it was a case of starting from scratch.
This book is specially written for women and takes all things into account (our metabolisms, our bones etc as well as the more obvious PMS, menopause and pregnancy). It gives advice on nutirition, training plans as well as preventing injury, cross training etc.
6 months later I am 3 and a half stone lighter and have just run my very first 10K in an hour!!!! How chuffed am ... Read More:
Rating: - very informative, bit daunting
This is a very thorough, detailed guide to running. I think it would be a little daunting to a beginner but is very useful for an intermediate runner looking to improve. On flicking through it I remember chapters on nutrition, racing, beginner's program, choosing trainers, weight loss...just about everything. Probably the best running book a female runner could buy.
Rating: - Great Book
I bought this book off the back of the below reviews. I have to say I was a little concerned about how much I was going to learn about 'how to run' from a book - alot of people said I would end up reading not running.
But I have found this to be a great source of knowledge and a great book to get you motivated about running without being intimidating. It speaks a simple language and touches on ever subject you could imagine that is relivant to running.
Highly recommended.
