 Rating:  - Way too time-consuming for my lifestyleThis is a wonderful book for impressing your guests with interesting recipes. However, I was hoping to find a good book with recipes for a variety of breads. This book has good explanations of techniques and ingredients. There are way too many "artisan" style breads like Bialys, Nan and Challah. Many recipes also use a starter. I prefer to grab ingredients off the shelf to make herb, wheat, foccacia, irish soda bread, etc. This book includes those also, but I'm afraid I paid too much for a book that didn't have many practical recipes. The sections other than breads were the same way... too time-consuming and complicated. Rating:  - The definitive baking book.Even if you make only a few of the many recipes in this extensive volume, you will learn a great deal about the WHYS involved in baking. The instructions and the photographs are clear & easy to follow, and produce excellent results. Rating: - The best general baking book to own.As an avid user of baking books, I can say this book is the best for detailed instructions for every basic type of bread and pastry dough. After the chapter on basics, the book then utilizes them in a variety of great recipes. I learned to make brioche with no problem. I regularly make the french apple tart and mocha brownie cake. The boca negra is great for special occasions. Rating: - Have no fear, Julia is here!Such precise, detailed instruction makes the world of pastry & breadmaking accessible to the novice. Expect extraordinary results and you will not be disappointed! Worth every cent. Rating: - ExtraordinaryI just finished reading reviews by others and can't believe they had problems with the recipes. Both technique and recipes are spectacular as always with Julia Child. I have made a number of recipes from this book and all were more than excellent. The presentation itself is inspirational. |
