Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A SAVIOUR, BASIC COOKERY HANDBOOK, 27 Sep 2005
A SAVIOUR, BASIC COOKERY HANDBOOK, 27 Sep 2005
By Colin Neville (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As a Type 1 Diabetic since 1963, blood testing, correct Insulin dosage and correct quantities of sensible foods are my first daily basic essentials for continuation of life. When my ex-wife announced an unexpected divorce in 1990, I had to learn very quickly, how to cook; in order to survive. This book was my saviour. It teaches the rudiments for the preparation and cooking of: vegetables, meats, poultry and fish, in an easy to understand no frills, no nonsense manner. It recommends portion sizes/weights, cooking times and temperatures. It also suggests which vegetables to accompany the subject meat, poultry or fish dish. A first ... Read More:

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - No useful information beyond common sense
I purchased this book as a reasonable cook myself, to hopefully try one or two simple recipes not currently in my repetoire.
This book regurgitates things that are often written on the packet when you buy food from the supermarket! I feel this is rather unnecessary.
I also tried a new recipe from the book, found the recipe far too brief, and the results did not live up to expectations.
Perhaps the author should have spent less time explaining how to fry or grill bacon (anyone can do that!), and more time explaining the not quite so simple dishes, like a Spanish Omlette for instance - I feel one paragraph was rather insufficient.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - So easy
When someone sees this book they often laugh at the title but then I tell them just what a fantastic book it actually is and they realise maybe they should have a look though. Started at uni, barely a kitchen and this book taught me how to make those simply things when I really didn't have a clue. Next to copying someone else its the best way to learn and still helps me today (and i actually have a decent kitchen now ;) )

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great

This is a fairly simple but extremely useful book and very much a worthwhile addition to your library.

There are lots of quick and easy recipes and they a lot more varied than you might think - because of that, there's pretty much something for just about every taste. It's just a pity there are no pictures, but even so, it is worth buying.

And at the price, it's a bargain - you can't really go wrong with this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The first recipe book anyone should buy
I was given this book when I went to University many many years ago.
It's pretty much the only recipe book I have used consistently ever since.
Even now many years later with a wife and four children this is the book we turn to when cooking "normal" food.
This book has simple recipes that the whole family can enjoy. There are some more adventurous recipes if you are feeling inclined.
This book is a little gem and worth every single penny.
