Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Becky and Mollie
`Why the Whales Came' is another amazing book from children's laureate, marvellous Michael Morpurgo.

It tells the story of two children growing up in the Isles of Scilly (Bryher). From the cradle, Gracie and Dan have been warned not to go near a mysterious man named the "Birdman". However, when they are forced to use a forbidden beach, strange messages start appearing in the sand...

We are only nine years old and this is one of our favourite books. We would give it four stars because it is so good. It's packed with action and excitement. It leaves you with tons of different emotions and feelings. You'll for yourself if you read the book.

This is an electrifying adventure, which is brilliantly written by marvellous Mr. Morpurgo. At some points, this book will scare you to death at others it could make you cry with sympathy.

The story is told through the eyes of Gracie - an overworked, pressured girl with an eager, persuasive, overpowering friend, Daniel. They live on the Isle of Bryher, one of the Isles of Scilly. From a young age, the children have been warned to stay away from the mysterious `Birdman of Bryher'. But when messages appear in the sand, the friends are tempted to find out more about him. Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Why the Whales Came - Courtney and Daisy
This is magical, mystical story about two children who live in the Scilly Isles during the First World War (on the island of Bryher).

Daniel and Gracie have been warned not to go near a peculiar man - the `Birdman of Bryher'. However, when they have to use a beach near to him and messages begin appearing in the sand, they become intrigued by him and the stories about the curse of Samson. And when Daniel and Gracie accidentally get stranded on Samson and find a whale's horn, could the curse of Samson be true?

This book is for 8+. A story drenched in mystery and excitement. We would recommend it to anyone.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Rumours and Curses
The main characters are Gracie Jenkins, Daniel Pender and the Birdman. Gracie is an only child, but a timid one at that. Daniel has lots of family, and aspires to be a good carver. As for the Birdman, well, let's just say he's extremely reclusive.
The story is set in the Isles of Scilly (south-west of Cornwall) at the start of the First World War, and is about a tiny community doing it's best to survive.
My favourite chapter is Chapter 11, "Last Chance" because it has lots of excitement and another thing . . . My least favourite part was when the Preventative arrived.
I would reccomend the book to anyone who likes action, adventure, drama, dilemmas, puzzles, generally anyone and everyone who hasn't read the book!
Overall, I ... Read More:
