Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores.  Rating:  - dont believe the hypeafter watching this film, you can come to only one conclusion, and that is it is very bad. you have a cast of actors such as pierce brosnan, colin firth and julie walters, that atempt to sing,but lets face it, these people are actors and actresses, as you will find out if you ever have the misfortune to watch it, singing is very bad.you have a cast of lets say britannia high on crack on a greek island,and everyone smiling more than is humanly possible. meryl streep is the only thing that makes it classed as a film,great acting, and can even sing. storyline, wow this will make everyone believe that sleeping around is an okay thing. meryl streep ,the lets say promiscuous woman, sleeping with three blokes around the same time. you have a daughter ... I enjoy a bit of cheesy music as much as the next man but 105 minutes of ABBA ended up feeling like 180 minutes. Rating: - Mamma Mia is Brilliant Amazing, Film of 2008 Mamma Mia is amazing and incredible film, one of the best musicals ever to hit a Film Contains Fun, Laughts, Sexy Voices and more, I loved it so much i seen it in the Cinema 8 times alone and now ordered the DVD, Amanda Seyfried brings out the passion to her music and Sexy style from Honey Honey song, to the powerful Meryl singing The Winner Takes it all and the ballad surprise Great vocals from Pierce Brosnan with when all is said and done, the film will not disappointed you, You Will love it Rating:  - BRILLIANTA FEEL GOOD SMASHING MOVIE. I GOT DRAGGED TO THE CINEMA BY MY MUM AND SISTERS I WASNT LOOKING TOO FORWARD TO IT AS I DIDNT THINK I WOULD LIKE IT HOWEVER AFTER THE FIRST 15MINS I WAS CLEARLY WRONG. I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS FILM. ITS PERFECT FOR A DULL DAY WHEN ALL YOU NEED IS A BIT OF SUNSHINE!! |
