Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Englishness at its best
If you hanker back to a time when life was simple, people were allowed to be characters, and authority didn't poke its nose into every orifice, read John Moore's books. His portrait of Elmbury (actually Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire) is a roistering, colourful picture of life in an English abbey town, full of people of Shakespearean proportions. Beautifully written, a huge dose of nostalgia, and I strongly urge you to go on to his other books available from Amazon, The Blue Field and Brensham Village and, if you can find them, his novels (look in charity shops or second hand book shops) of which Midsummer Meadow, September Moon, and Dance and Skylark in particular will transport you to a time and place from which you will not want to return. John Moore was a true countryman - read his books and you will be embraced by the scents, sounds and sights of the English countryside at all seasons of the year and in all its glory. An under-rated writer and I am so glad I found him. If you are ever in Tewkesbury, spare a moment to visit the John Moore Countryside Museum, in a half-timbered house just around the corner from the Abbey.
