Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The best reference on vegetarian nutrition I've found.
My wife has been a lacto and mostly ovo vegetarian for over a decade, and I've been slowly reducing my intake of meats for years. We're both athletes; my wife in particular places or wins local trail marathons. We now have a new baby, and my wife is breastfeeding her.

I had specific questions about protein, calcium uptake, and essential fatty acids. This book answered all of my questions with charts, graphs, and thorough discussion, including vegetarian child nutrition. I've checked various sources for this information for years and I'm sorry I wasted my time. I wish I'd just bought this book sooner and saved the effort.

"Becoming Vegetarian" is the most informative book for a new vegetarian that I have found. It has sections dealing with every potential pitfall to vegetarian dining that one is likely to encounter. Given this book and the desire to stop eating meat, you CAN do it safely and improve your health.

Tips from this book lead to me checking my B1-B12 intakes as well as my iron with the result that I now supplement my diet.

Highly recommended by a former carnivore.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best choice for new vegetarians
This book provides those who want to become vegetarian but thought they didn't know how, the steps to adopting a meatless diet. It discusses many of the concerns would-be vegetarians may have, such as, "will I get enough protein?", "is the diet really healthier?", and "what can I cook?". It also tackles the less mentioned topic of etiquette and what to do with those who may not agree with a vegetarian lifestyle. The book concludes with a small recipe section to get readers started with vegetarian cooking. Easy to read and enjoyable. Definitely a must. My only recommendation would have been a more complete analysis of the recipes for those people wishing to cut fat.
