Rating: - TOTAL RUBBISH SAVE YOUR MONEY
This book contains nothing new (just reguritated safe diving practices which you should already know) unless you have never dived! in which case there are a ton on better books that you should be reading. happy diving
Rating: - All my own impressions
I read this book after diving for 16 years, about 10 years ago. I learned a lot. It isn't a recipe book, but it is about making divers think. If the procedures of solo diving have to be spelled out to you, then you shouldn't even be thinking about it. Remember: all underwater photographers, all instructors, are effectively solo divers. Remember also that solo diving invalidates most insurance policies....
I think that anyone considering increasing their diving knowledge should read this book.

I usually don't take book reviews too seriously. It is after all one persons view. However, in this case I must agree with bubblefish777. There is nothing new in this book that most divers don't know. Perhaps those new to diving may find parts of the book helpful. I have found more information via search engines about the pros/cons/views of solo diving. I dive with five other divers who all solo dive once they are down the shot. I am going to do solo diving with them when the 2004 season in the UK kicks off again. Until then I advise people to use their common sense and dive with a twin set. Myself, I use a 300bar 12ltr and a 300bar 3ltr pony....Safe diving, Mike.
Rating: - Why Bother ?
This book was a complete waste of money for me. I am quite interested in diving solo and as such have progressed to PADI Rescue Diver and read Technical Diving magazines. However if you do this then there is nothing in this book that will be new to you. Basics of Nitrox, Pony Tanks, and corrent management of yourself and equipment will all be familiar to you. If you're not an RD then you should NOT be thinking about diving solo as you will not be experienced enough to problem solve during a crises and this book is certainly not going to give you that or the specialist knowledge you need. In all I was very dissapointed. I expected proceedural information, checklists, equipment recommendations (outside of the norm such as transponders on the 155.5 Mhz band for Air/Sea rescue). The book is thin and is further padded with stories on why people dive solo. Do yourself a favour. If you want to dive solo look elsewhere and do some research and update your skills.
