- A Winning FormulaSuper Smash Bros Brawl is a fine example of Nintendo's ability to deliver consistently pleasing franchises, also seen with the recent release of Mario Kart Wii. However, for whatever reasons I've found myself spending a lot more time on SSBB than Mario Kart. Brawl sees the return of many favourite fighters such as the inevitable Mario, Donkey Kong and Starfox - with some new favourites added in the form of Meta Knight, The Pokemon Trainer and even non-Nintendo Brawlers Solid Snake and Sonic. This range of Nintendo favourites taps into the rich and diverse Nintendo product history that these kind of games rely on, much more so than its Mario Kart counterpart- similarly there are LOTS of trophies and the new addition of stickers to collect. If you've played Super Smash Bros Melee before you'll find the multiplayer brawls as straightforward and fun as ever, a good thing for both experienced and new gamers, with plenty of new and interesting items to assist you in combat. In single player mode there is the addition of a campaign with the Subspace Emissary - a surprisingly rewarding addition to keep you busy when the friends go home. Similarly, there are plenty of other challenges to meet to win trophies - target smash, boss battles, event matches - all which serve to further extend the game's playability and value for money. One final issue is the online play, not being an online gamer i've not yet tried this out but the fact that it is limited to four players seems a bit of a letdown when Mario Kart can be up to 12 racers, but that's just minor griping. This is an instant classic and one of those games Wii owners like myself have been waiting for to justify their purchase of the console. Buy it, you won't be disappointed! Rating: - Super Smash Bros Let-down?I have to say that although this is a good game, it certainly to me hasn't lived up to the hype and build up created by the numerous delays. As well as this it is plagued with both major and minor flaws that really hinder play and limit enjoyment. Firstly the good points: Many characters to play, nice graphics, good soundtrack, online play (more on that later) and potentially hours of play. BUT! On the bad side: So far i have only tried using the wii/nunchuck controls and just the wii mote alone and i have to say both these methods of control are APALLING. The controls are slow, unresponsive and unimaginative (no motion-detection used). These slow responding controls make it at times a NIGHTMARE to play, especially online where lag just makes it even worse. The online itself is poor at best and while the 'kid friendly' anonymous play may please parents, hardcore gamers or older gamers will just find it renders the entire online aspect useless. There is no kind of stat monitoring or rank and as usual Nintendo have made it as hard as possible to play friends by making you manually add an exclusive SSBB code before you can play. Finally, the single player SSE 'campaign', while a good idea, is just repetetive and weak and after a few 'stages' older gamers are likely to just call it a day. So overall SSBB as a single player game is quite weak and those wanting a good online game should stay well clear. However, as i'm sure you will all already know, for a gathering with mates this is a good competitive multiplayer that is sure to give you hours of entertainment (and arguments). Rating: - Best game out for the wii This is the best game out for the wii by far. The old super smash bros melee on the gamecube was amazing and this one is even better. Its about time the wii had some hardcore original classics, instead of the cheap granny motion sensor games! The single player is great a lot better than melee, the group brawl is so much fun with friends and there is even fantastic online modes !! So overall this game is 10/10 a must by for the wii !!! Rating: - PerfectThe graphics are simply stunning, as is the crazy yet fast paced and fun gameplay of it. Despite the 12+ rating it has no blood, gore, sex, fear or gambling. An essential. But I fully recommend you get a gamecube controller for it, Wii Remote, and Wiimote/Nunchuk combo are both poor (especially the former.) Online play is not as good as MK Wii but still brilliant. I got this the day it came out and I was very satisfied. Rating: - Everything you could want in a Super Smash Bros game and more...I've been playing the Super Smash Bros series since its debut on the N64, and really must credit it as being one of the finest multiplayer games of all time. The Wii version brings far improved graphics, an online mode and a host of new characters made possible by their deals with Sega and Konami. I must admit I haven't yet tried the online mode (my internet is playing up a bit), but it is a welcome (perhaps overdue?) addition to the game. It's very hard to review this game on its own, as it isn't as much of revolution over its predecessors as, say Super Mario Galaxy is, and makes no effort what-so-ever to take advantage of the Wii remote's unique capabilities (a welcome break, in my opinion), but brings whole new dimensions to the game (perhaps I'm exaggerating) with new items such as 'Final Smash', which is great fun, as chaos breaks out as all the players are suddenly chasing a glowing ball which allows the obtainer to perform a move of immense destruction unique to their character (for example, Fox summons a flying tank which blasts players off the screen). Single player, though not as fun as playing with mates, has its perks too, with a storyline with some very nicely animated (and skippable!) cut-scenes and side-scrolling action remenissant to Super Mario Bros with the ability to smash anything that gets in your way off the screen, as opposed to tamely jumping on it. Summing Up: To those of you who loved the last games, buy this one. This is the first Super Smash Bros game I've ever actually owned, and it's endless fun. All the best bits from the last game are back in full-detailed texture, including moves, scenarios, and there are loads of new features. As for those of you who are unfamiliar with the series, buy this with an open mind. Your expectations are wrong, and you cannot get a real feel of the game simply from trailers and images. Play it with a few mates, and you'll see why this game is the holy grail of multiplayer mayhem. If your the type that spends every Saturday night in with pizza and Assassin's Creed, then don't expect any wonders from the single player - it's just not that kind of game. For the rest of us, a colourful near-flawless must-have to brighten up an increasingly stale collection of Wii titles. |
