Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Appalling
I've spent the past four months trying to write a book using Word 2007 - It has proved to be one of the most irritating and complicated pieces of software that I've ever had the misfortune to use.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant so far - an excellent upgrade
I have just received Office 2007 Home & Student and Outlook 2007 to upgrade from 2003 - and after reading some of the reviews here I was initially a bit wary. Thank goodness I took no notice. It's a vast improvement and I have adapted to the new format almost instantly.

First - I decided to upgrade over 2003 because unless you are committed to a new software upgrade you are tempted to go back to the familiar. Or so I thought. In any case - running both does have some difficulties unless you make some registry changes (so I've read) so I opted for the complete upgrade. Installation went without a hitch and all my data was there in Outlook - safe and sound.

Now to the infamous ribbon - it's easy to learn (I've only had the software a few hours and I'm using it as if I'd had it forever) and I do find it more intuitive. I had to look up how to compare documents (I do a lot of marking for students and so comparing revised assignments is a major task for me) and the new version is heavenly. My styles transferred across - and virtually everything I've needed to do (insert pictures, add a border to an image, use a spreadsheet, send e-mails, etc) has gone without a hitch. In many cases I found I'd done it without even thinking about it.

My concession to the old way of working was to add all my favourites to the Quick Access Toolbar (I didn't realise from the reviews that you can add anything at all to this) so I can still one-click on the things I use a lot - just like in 2003. Frankly I cannot understand why anyone would go back to an earlier version after trying this. And the price is sweet.

I am looking forward to exploring even more delights. I wish I had upgraded sooner.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent value and it increases productivity
I read the reviews on MS Office 2007 (Home & Student edition) and was a little concerned that this product would be of an inferior quality to the 2003 version.
At first glance the difference between 2007 and previous versions is significant, however this difference is to the benefit of the product. Excel has a simplicity that ensures greater productivity and Powerpoint provides a clear and concise slide generation process that removes many of the nuances of previous versions (e.g slide animation consistency). 1note improvements will benefit students with the introduction of a clear note book fileing system.
So overall I am pleased with the product and my only gripe is that the Project 2007 version (a stand alone product) lacks the "Ribbon" application.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Dumbed-down version of Office 2003 - hate it!
Very painful to use if you're familiar with Office 2003, or indeed just about any other program package! I consider myself highly computer literate; I work with computers all day every day, yet it is taking me a LONG time to learn how to do everything in Office 2007 that I could do with ease in 2003. The drop-down menus are gone, which not only means you have to learn what a load of new pictoral symbols mean, but is also quite slow and cumbersome to operate. The new version of Excel is particularly awful - extremely inflexible. It's fine if you just want a simple graph but if you want any level of sophistication - stick with excel 2003 because 2007 does not let you manipulate the data. I felt like 2007 was an "Excel for dummies" program.

And the Office Assistant is no more - sob! - bring back the cat!!

My overall feeling about Office 2007 is that Microsoft have changed things for the sake of changing things without any consideration of efficiency or flexibility for the user. I can not think of one single advantage of this new version over Office 2003.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Takes getting used to
If you've been used to using previous versions, i'd say stick to them. Office 07 has a very different layout to its older versions. It can take some getting used to depending on how good you are at using computers. It took me a while to find some of the features i wanted, but i suppose thats because of the new additional features which make it easy to manipulate the text and have more control.

If you just want to get things done quickly with no fuss i don't think this would be for you. But i really like it!
