Next to the wonderful graphics, the game was lots of fun, except for the very unpleasant flamethrower scenes, right until I upped it to the max level. Let me explain.
Single Player, I am part of a small Russian squad trying to flush the Germans out of the Seelow Heights, a hilly and forested landscape.
My team mates all stand more or less out in the open, several are far ahead of me, and most are shooting at ...something. Whenever I try to sneak the tiniest bit closer, or stand upright, all hell breaks loose. And I am dead in two seconds. Whereas my team mates continue to stand way ahead, only half concealed, unhurt, as if invisible. If I somehow manage to wriggle closer on my belly, I am being chased around by hand grenades thrown by German soldiers I can't possibly see, and who really shouldn't possibly be able to see me. But the way they are ignoring the rest of my squad, perhaps they really can see only me.
Yeah, I know. There has to be a level beyond what is barely possible to maintain interest in the game, but this is ridiculous. Such a pity, but I can see no purpose in continuing. I played some Call of Duty online several years ago, but that stopped the very moment I emptied my Bren into someone with no effect whatsoever, and he camly walked right up to me and ended it with a single shot. A game can cheat too, and WaW does it big time.
Which reminds me of the Stalingrad sniper: I know where he will be in the far distance, I know he'll be in the open for half a second, a tiny figure in that particular window. I have that very spot in my scope, and I time my breath to perfection. But he is visible in a flash and shoots me dead before I can press the trigger. Very funny. Several times I have squeezed off a shot just before he did, but the effect was never more than "only a graze". Whereas I am done for immediately. Always. I am sorry to say it is just too frustrating, too uphill.
But if you trust your reflexes and are in total command of the controller, I suppose you wouldn't mind that extra level of frustration.

The offline single player game is good but it is let down by the online multiplayer. I can't comment about the online co operative game as to date since the launch i have been unable to connect to any friends on PSN to find out.
There is no information from Treyarch about what is being done to fix this and there are thousands of people suffering the same problems.
Personally i will not be buying any more Treyarch products and am considering returing this game as it does not work correctly.
Please don't buy this until it has been fixed or get it for the XBox360 instead like i wish i had.

The campaign is very good but maybe a little too short, whereas the online is more difficult than COD4 and gets very boring after a while. So i am going to stick to Little Big Planet, FIFA 09 and Call of Duty 4...
Rating: - treyarch fail again
Treyarch are lucky infinity ward exist so they can copy COD4's multiplayer because otherwise this game would be a total truckload of fail!
The single player is one of the worst I have ever played and actually manages to have AI worse than killzone 1!!!(a new record I think)
The multiplayer is only good because treyarch copied COD4 but I have played so much of COD4's multiplayer that I grew tired of this games multiplayer very quickly.
If you own COD4 I don't think there is much point in buying wprld at war.

Taking the COD4 engine works a dream with this game. It does feel familiar, but its still a great game in itself! Really this game is about playing online - at the moment there are bugs, quite annoying ones, so I hope they plan to fix that in a patch.
Good to see the ranks, and other small tweaks made here. Nice to see your stats online and compare to friends too.
