Middlesex is a modern epic novel, narrated by Cal - a genetically male hermaphrodite who is raised a girl and doesn't realise his gender until he hits puberty. It is also the story of Cal's eccentric Greek-American family, and the times in which they live.
The novel is well written and always engaging to read. I preferred the middle and end sections, which focussed more on Cal and his life, than the first third or so which was centered on Cal's grandparents and was rather unnecessary. Eugenides is good at writing descriptively and capturing the mood of a place and time; be it the burning of the Greek city of Smyrna, prohibition in the USA, life in a girls' school, or Detroit's race riots.
