I was really looking forward to reading this for my book group. Maggie O'Farrel writes in a very readable style and I have to say that you cannot help being moved by the story of Esme Lennox who has been incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital for being no more than a 'spirited' young woman. The themes explore, through Esme and her neice (a twist there, wont spoil!) the bounds of socially acceptable behaviour now and in Esmes youth, which was very interesting. However, I felt that the theme of Esme being institutionalised for the past 60 years could have been better developed and more believeable. All in all though a good read and interesting subject matter for a reading group.
