Corsica is a much larger and more varied island than the first time visitor might expect so a good guidebook is essential, (Corsica is roughly the same size as Wales). The Cadogan Guide has an excellent balance of reference and background information, with enough detailed text to allow informed decisions on where to visit. However, some simple local maps to accompany the guide's recommendations would have been helpful as even a Michelin roadmap struggles to make sense of Corsica's rural roads, leading to a few wrong turns on the way when hunting for that remote beach or tower, (not a real problem if you've adopted a suitably chilled out holiday mood).
