Anna Netrebko is a great operatic soprano.
The statement is fortified by her riveting acting onstage and her ability to capture audience's fancy by her striking stage presence. This is a great star soprano. Having said that, while she does have the making of a great singer, being endowed with a beautiful dark-hued lyrical soprano with a good range and large volume, she has the greatest draw-back of being 'beautifully shallow' in her characterisations. Nor do I think that coloratura is her cup of tea. I still opine that her Russian operatic repertoire as she sang it in the days at Russia at Kirov represents the best of Anna Netrebko, and not the Italian bel cantos or Verdi.
