I've loved 44 scotland street more than any other McCallSmith books but ... After reading that latest/last volume I wondered whether McCallSmith had really written it. Yes, it has some the spirit of the previous books, yet it is totally different. Less witty, less ... something. This one definetly doesn't have it.
There is a huge gap between that volume and the previous (or have I missed something?) and the characters are totally out of character. They're becoming heavy and unreal, which is rather weird for a McCallSmith book.
Of course it is well written (hence the 3*), it still has some and some fantastics chapters (and some very long ones), but something's gone. Maybe it's me...
However I've discussed it with another fan ... Read More:

I've really got into this series, of which this book is the fifth, and look forward to further instalments in the life of Isabel Dalhousie. She is such a likeable and honourable character that you want things to go well for her. McCall Smith writes convincingly and sympathetically about her feelings. I've never been a fan of philosophy, but the author manages to interweave moral conundrums naturally into the story such that it makes one think about the issues. I find the Philosophy Club series (and his Scotland Street books) an antidote to the crime fiction that I also enjoy as the former portray the nicer side life. An added pleasure is the descriptions of familiar streets and shops in Edinburgh. I would recommend that readers start at the ... Read More:

Finding a new Alexander McCall Smith book in my local book shop is always a pleasure. He is almost the only current writer whose books I will buy in hardback without any misgiving and without knowing anything about the book first. But, lately, he seems to be getting ever more prolific.

Mostly set in my favourite county, Suffolk, with most of the action (such as it is) during the World War II, this is the kind of book that would make an excellent short TV period drama series (or maybe just a single long drama). It's nice to have a one off novel from this writer for a change, as Precious Ramotswe and Isabel Dalhousie will soon need a bookshelf all to themselves in my house. I enjoyed the story this book tells, but like the other reviewer I ... Read More:

I loved the Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency series when it first appeared, but like so many things in life, as I read further entries in the series, they grew progressively less enchanting. Perfectly fun and readable, but somewhat familiar and no longer greatly anticipated, until I stopped after the fifth. Needing something fairly simple for short a car ride, I picked up the audio version of this eighth in the series, and revisited the familiar characters and their beloved Botswana.

This installment features three separate cases for the detective agency, all of which underscore the book's (and series') main theme: personal relationships. Mma. Ramotswe is asked by a distant relative to investigate the mysterious deaths of three patients at the hospital ... Read More:

Wayward daughters. Missing husbands. Philandering partners. Curious conmen. If you've got a problem, and no one else can help you, then pay a visit to Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only - and finest - female detective agency.

I loved this book. Simple, cute, an easy read and completely charming. Each chapter is one of Precious Ramotswe investigations. And, as the blurb says, these aren't horrendous murders and acts of terrorism she's investigating, she doesn't have a gun and conduct high speed pursuits. She simply uses her whit and charm to solve the range of problems her clients bring to her.

Precious Ramotswe is a size 22, she's not worried about fasion and glamour. She's not your stereotypical female heroine and I loved that.

I honestly think that Alexander McCall Smith has lost interest in Precious and the crew, the repetition in this novel starts to grate a bit.

Like his Isabel Dalhousie novels, the characters sometimes become cyphers rather than real life people. Previously one of the attractions of this series was that the characters seemed real and warm hearted.

At one point AMS refers to JLB Maketoni as her fiancé, when they've been married for a couple of novels!

Maybe the author just needs to ease back on his prodigious output until the charm returns.

Fans only.

Please, if you haven't read any of the novels in the 44 Scotland Street series, you should immediately go order and read 44 Scotland Street and then move on to Espresso Tales and Love Over Scotland before reading The World According to Bertie. Before making that decision, let me explain a little about the series. It began as a serial novel in The Scotsman newspaper. As a result, the writing is broken up into little vignettes that are loosely tied to each other by the relations the characters have with each other.

There's no doubt about it, Bertie Pollock makes this series work. He is the young (perpetually six so far), and blameless, example of what we all aspire to be . . . honest, fair, serious, humble, and considerate. Bertie has a problem (and we have a source ... Read More:

This novel has a texture and a fragrance that come directly from Botswana, from Africa. The plot is no plot at all. It is a big rich slice of the cake we call life seen through the critical eyes of a woman and tasted through her own tongue and mouth, a woman who sort of deconstructs and reconstruct the world around her for our pleasure. She explores the characters and behaviors of simple people because that is her job, being a private detective, and she has the trust of several other people which enables her to bring into the picture, her picture, all the hues and details the others can contribute. It is also a novel in which several types of women are the media we need to capture the world. These women are different but they have one common point: their enterprising spirit, even faith, that makes them ... Read More:
