Despite what you may read elsewhere, BFTA is not a total disaster. Yes, it has very poor character development, yes it is riddled with tired stereotypes and cliches, yes its poorly edited, yes its not a patch on the first four books (I liked Fulgrim, worth the entrance fee for the opera scene alone).
The final quarter of the book shows great pacing, however, and is genuinely exciting as it races towards the sadly obvious conclusion. Good writing in this genre, I think, is measured by 'movie moments' - scenes and set pieces where you can visualise the action in your head as it would appear on the big screen, with a worthy director and unlimited budget. Mhotep's struggle with his demonic adversary is one such moment, as is Cestus' ... Read More:

This is where the traitor legions tear their loyal parts off and become a "stronger legion".
The story is well writen and fast paced in Ben Counter style. It portray's the Isstvan III massacre and ultimately has a sad ending. It does have lots of battles though and is certainly worth the read, although some how it didnt leave me as emotionally effected by the end unlike its predecessor, but more than the first volume.
In my opinion it wasn't the best of the original trilogy but did point me in the right direction for other black library publications (in terms of author). 5 stars!

Well i'm a huge fan of Fantasy fiction, and finding myself at a loss when looking for new Fantasy reads. I decided to plunge into the world of Science Fiction, The Soul Drinker's Omnibus being my first in this genre, and I must say I truly enjoyed this novel.
The Soul Drinker's is an amazingly well written piece of Fiction, the story is epic in every way, from the beginning of the novel where we are first introduced to the Soul Drinkers to the very last page. I found myself intrigued by their fighting creed and their fanaticism to their Emperor, even when it came to fighting their own space marines. Overall i'm very happy with my first attempt at this genre an will most definitely be reading more.

I enjoyed this book very much, reading it twice whithin a three day period.
What I particuly liked was the way the main character, Alaric, is ripped away from his comfort zone and forced to use his wits to survive rather being able to fall back on his tried and tested combat skills and his superior physical abilities. I'm sure that it will be very difficult for him to get back to his fellow Grey Knights after this experience :)
The fourth book in the detailing the Soul Drinkers trials and tribulations after leaving the corrupt bosom of the Imperium continues on from the previous book `Crimson Tears'. While responding to a distress signal from a world apparently abandoned by the Imperium, the renegade Chapter suffers one of its toughest tests to date when the brilliant new recruit Eumenes leads a revolt against his brothers, splitting the Soul Drinkers in two. More difficulties arise when the Imperial response eventually arrives in the form of the relentless Howling Griffins and the Inquisitor Thaddeus.
Although the Soul Drinkers series hasn't been the greatest of the Warhammer 40,000 novels but they have always been fun to read and this book is no exception. Although the first half of ... Read More:

I wanted a taste of other writers of the Warhammer 40K world and was interested in Ben Counter's contribution. I was pleasantly surprised to be so engrossed in this story as I was with my favourite author's novels, Dan Abnett. After reading it, I craved for more of his books.
A must buy, especially if you like the Grey Knights. A satisfying read all the way through.

The Grey Knights and an allied force from the Adeptus Mechanicus land on the surface of Chaeroneia only to be cut off from their fleet in orbit and fighting the very planet itself. Classic Ben Counter to be honest and is something that is, dare I say, a must read of not only Ben's work but also of the 40K series. It really doesn't stop and from bloody skirmish to gut deep gore of the open battlefield Ben's writing takes the reader into the trenches to witness it first hand. What more do fans want and this is the book I'd recommend to readers of Scalzi to try if they wanted to take a gamble.
