This story delivers a simple message. It warns of the dangers of indiscriminately believing everything one hears, and invites the reader to evaluate, analyse and review information before choosing how we react to those who the details relate to. In short, the message is don't be taken in by everything you see and hear.

Devoid of the trappings of flowery rhetoric, Zephaniah presents a straightforward account of one boy's quest to find the truth behind a horrendous murder he witnesses in the school playground. There is a noticeable lack of adjectives and adverbs, but this only serves to distance the reader from forming pre-conceived ideas about the characters presented in the story.

Zephaniah skilfully avoids stereotypes ... Read More:

As I was reading this book I got the impression it was written for children, but it would have been an insult to even a young child.
There was no depth to the characters for you to feel sympathy for them. It was also not at all related to the real world of refugee's and prejudices.
Sorry, It could have been a really good story, and did get my full attention in the opening chapter, but lost it's way in the telling.

This book makes a difficult subject accessible to a very broad range of readers. FACE can be read on many different levels and is very well written because of it. Read it for what it is, but also look at the metaphor of multiculturalism. I dare say that when BZ was writing FACE he had the lyrics from the Bob Marley song War in mind, which were adapted from an excerpt of Ethiopian Emperor H.I.M. Haile Selassie's address to the United Nations on October 1963 "Until the colour of a man's skin is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes me say war". Much of BZ's poetry in my opinion has this lyric in mind and whilst the book can be read (excuse the pun) at face value it also deals with the metaphor of multiculturalism better than I have ever ... Talking Turkeys is an endearing, captivating and at times melancholic book of poems brilliantly penned by Benjamin Zephaniah. The fate of Danny The Cat is especially heartbreaking. The author is a brilliant and benevolent thinker who obviously loves all creatures great and small. Zephaniah's poems are at once benign and profound and therefore should resonate with people of all ages. If Benjamin Zephaniah's utopian and peaceful worldview were reality, the earth would be an ideal place. Sadly, it is not, but give credit to the poet, Benjamin Zephaniah, for striving to improve life on earth for all its inhabitants ! He uses his enormous talents to engender reverence for life !

Having read much of his poetry I purchased Face, which i very much enjoyed, so I purchased Refuge Boy and enjoyed it so much I purchased this book. Benjamin Zephaniah's fiction seems to get better and better, and the quality is probably because it is based on good observation, and written in a style that draws the reader into the situation to experience what the characters are going through in a way that not so many writters are able to do. All his work seems to have a moral tale to tell, which I also enjoy so I am not certain why the chap who gave this book just 1 star seemed to think it was glamourising the subject, but my guess is that if he has read it, he didn't get much further than the title. I think this book should be compulsory reading for all ... Read More:

As expected, it would have been impossible to reach up to the standards of face and refugee boy, but this is still a pretty good book! Written in a similar style to his other books, this is not a novel but poetry, criticism and drama. it's worth a read.

Benjamin Zephania came to my school is Bangkok, Thailand (Bangkok Patana School) and gave a 'poetry reading', although it was so much more. He showed us how his poems are light-hearted but at the same time serious. this book features many of those poems and is amazing to read. The poems are fantastic (and are really good to use if you do drama for GCSE or IB/A level).

I definatly reccomend this book.

Propa Propaganda is a collection of poems intended for performance, although no less powerful is it read, written by the only poet worth reading, Benjamin Zephaniah. A man of such integrity and conciense that he turned down an OBE for his art and beliefs, Zephaniah brings poetry alive. Within the pages of Propa Propaganda is a torrent of emotions brought forth from the poet and given to the audience in language that can at different times be political, funny, harsh but always relevent and entertaining.
Zephaniah, with a tone unknown to any other poet, attacks all brands of predjudice withn our society and exposes the idiocy of the establishment. A true rebel with a true cause, Mr Benejamin Zephaniah is the political animal of political animals, unleashing on his ... Read More:
