I love this book - every recipe I have made has worked. Having repeatedly borrowed it from the library I tried to buy a copy without success - until now, with this lovely new paperback edition. She seems to have come up with many ideas that I have not seen elsewhere - very refreshing. Also, many recipes are for two people which avoids having to scale everything down - although she must have a bigger appetite than I have! There are no pictures of the food; instead there are vibrant fruit and vegetable ink paintings. I wouldn't have minded fewer of these but it's a small quible and better than nothing at all. It is one of the few books that I actually cook from out of my embarassingly large collection of vegetarian cookery books.

Ever wondered what is really in Haggis? Or what is an Arbroath Smokie, or cheddar cheese or a Sally Lunn or potted hough or patum perperium or..or...? Its all here with loads of fascinating background stories, beautifully presented in a proper binding and on paper that feels and smells as it should. Just like a milestone book ought to be. Giving this as a present might prove expensive, because you'll need another copy for youself when you see it.
