Too many gardening authors take time out to wax lyrical about seasons and the joys of blackbirds and dew on your runner canes. Their books end up as a decent afternoon's read, but difficult to use when you're trying to work out what's going wrong with your kohlrabi.
This book is different. Veg are listed alphabetically with clear sections on selecting varieties, planting, looking after, harvesting and cooking, with a troubleshooting guide covering disease, pests, storage and the like. No nonsense, everything you need and easy to find. >>More Details |

I have the 2002 edition, but it still only offers imperial measurements. While this may be an irritation for some, I do find inches and feet so much more appropriate for practical matters like gardening!
An excellent book with a great deal of practical advice on planting, mulching, pruning, picking, disease control, etc. I would prefer just a little more detail on these matters, however, and perhaps a slightly less comprehensive list of varieties - many of which are not availabe even from specialist nurseries. But why change much - how much can gardening change? I have just ordered the Rose Expert. >>More Details |

I found this book really helpful with lots of illustrations and easily understood information about lots of trees and shrubs. I managed to identify several of my shrubs that I did not know the name of, from the illustrations, as there are some quite unusual ones there. My only wish would be that the book was in the same format, but dealing with flowering shrubs only and twice as many of them. Overall though an excellent book.

As with all Dr Hessayon Book this is a great addition to your collection.
I have just been back to college to do a NVQ in Horticulture; I didn't know anything about these books until my tutor let me have a read of it. I found this book to be a great source of information for a beginner, and I also think very keen gardeners will also use the book as the information is vast. It covers what kind of plants can and can not be used in certain soil type, also covers soil structures. The book has some very good photos, some you will probably know and some you may not. If you are just seeking one book on lawns and their care, buy this one. Although the content in parts is dated the basic techniques are still relevant today. In today's climate of ecology and organics the high use of chemicals is frowned upon but this was not the case when the first edition was written, also the author worked in the chemical industry.

Another great Dr Hessayon book
I'm not a rose person myself but I bought this book as my wife likes roses and we had a very sad looking rose in the back garden. I was going to dig it up and compost it, glad I didn't as it just didn't like the soil it was in. I came across the book in a charity shop [...], turned out to be a bargain really. The book covers all kinds of varieties of roses from Hybrid tea to patio and ground covering roses, even covers climbing and ramblers. Fantastic photo evidence which helps to identify your roses, and a general description about it. Covers what kind of rose will grow better and where is the best place to plant it.
