The new edition of The Oxford Guide to Literary Britain & Ireland is an indispensable travel companion, both for explorers and armchair travellers alike. Nearly 2,000 places - villages, towns, cities, and landscapes - are referred to, inviting readers to explore connections with their favourite writers, from where they were born and lived, to where they worked and found inspiration for their writing. In this new edition you can find living authors, as well as all the classics, so from Chaucer, to Jane Austen, to Philip Pullman, you can take a literary journey through history to the present day.
The book is neatly organised by region, and then indexed by writers and place names so it's quite easy to find what you're looking for. ... Read More:

I love children's books. My children are less keen but when I find the right subject and tone they can be torn away from the playstation, gameboy or computer. But finding the books is really hard unless you are a librarian or teacher.
This book is an answer to every parent who wants their children to become a book worm. It is also much better than any other children's book guide I have ever used.
Why is it so good?
First,it is fun to use because it is as clearly laid out as a Tracey Beaker novel.
Secondly, each recommended book has a review, clearly written with enough information to make a judgement but not so much you feel bogged down. Another strength is it is not just one person's opinion. A team of contributers ... Read More:

This is for anyone who thinks that African literature is always a sombre, serious depiction of tragedy. Agualusa's novel though set entirely in Angola feels very European in tone and content. It's a novel of ideas, a novel of challenges, a novel where all is not quite as it might seem, where everyone is a chameleon.
Narrated by the gecko who lives on the wall of Felix Ventura's flat, the action follows Ventura in his business of recreating genealogies for those who want to reinvent themselves or reestablish themselves as people of worthy repute in the new Angola. He is visited by a shadowy foreigner and invents a persona for him, which he then seems to grow into until even Ventura is unsure of where fact and fiction meet. Into Ventura's world ... Read More:

With publishers arranging to advertise any old rubbish before it's even been written, here at last is a good way to find what's worth reading to the very young, instead of just what's on the shelves. Following the recommendations becomes addictive. But, just think! Your determination is enriching the shelves of your local library (ask for a request card when things aren't there. Or ask them to order the book you want through inter-library loan.) There are companion copies for older children too.

I picked this up to find books for my kids.
I came away with lots of books I want to read!
This excellent guide covers serious classics that I would not have thought to suggest to teens - right through to light and fluffy reads that are being written right now. There are sections covering different genres (eg Race, Graphic novels, Detetective stories) and the reviewers are writers, parents, children and journalists.
I cannot recomend this book enough. Five stars plus!

Wonderful read (something you would take to the beach with you especially for those hot summer holidays in a tropical climate) Set in Angola, Brazil and Portugal during the close of the Portuguese slave trade the book takes the form of corrispondance letters first of all from a middle class Portuguese liberal who arrives in Angola and falls in love with a local African woman and finaly from the lady herself.
Its a lovely read, wonderfully describing Angola during the 19th century the sights, the sounds the mixed culture both African and European. The author is also wise not to make things out too idealistic concerning the conditions of both native freedmen and slaves while being keen to describe how the Angolan capital had become a racial melting pot. ...
