A superb little book. I have a couple of other curry books but this is by far and away my favourite. The recipies are, as the sub-title says, a combination of the traditional- rogan josh, vindaloo, bhuna etc- and the contemporary.It is here that critics of the book will no doubt take umbrage. They will complain that these contemporary takes are just a little too eager to impress Michelin judges, a little to far from the Madhur crowd. Cynics will find ample ammunition for their arguments in the seemingly incongruous use of expensive ingredients-Morel mushrooms and green pea curry anyone? This is a beautiful and well written cookbook. it aims at being comprehensive and authentic and definitely succeeds. However, the author has the most exacting and uncompromising approach to ingredients and recipes i have ever encountered in a cookbook and this really undermines it in the long run. This book is all about producing the food that Thais eat in Thailand and as such, demands a whole bunch of really specialised ingredients. I live in Manchester and we have a bunch of Chinese/Asian supermarkets and at least 3 Thai food stores and even then I've had real trouble finding some of the things. I am a keen cook. Self taught in most things, hit or miss with almost everything I cook,but always appreciated, I found this book very helpful.
Felt like I have a good teacher to keep m right. Yet to come across another on the same par as this. Feel like it lets you in on a lot of top little cooking secrets and tips that make all the difference. >>More Details |

Never before have I come across a body of text that has provided not only the tools for academic success within the subject, but inspiration for taking my own work to new levels through the intensive research Bordwell & Thompson have gone through. In my own studies 'Film Art' has been an inspiration and the summarisation of other works within it has meant less time needed on reading and more can be concentrated on putting pen to paper. A rare theoretical must-have.

This book would have got 5 stars if it included more of the regular New Frontier characters. The conclusion is also very rushed and obviously sets up the story which will run for the next few books. But this is not a total loss as the writting of Peter David is at its best and the story generally flows following the adventures of Xyon, who has a clouded past, more info to follow. If you have enjoyed this series to date then jump on board, if you are only interested in the sexual exploits of the Exaliber crew then skip it.
