Apart from the many other creations that Scots gave to the World like the steam engine,the telephone,the television,etc etc and to the English their bank we gave whisky. Malts are to me the best of whisky drinks but not an Islay malt, a good Speyside malt will do lovely. Nine or ten of them is quite enough otherwise it degenerates into drinking as the old man said. I think also incidentally connected with that that there may be two reasons why our Calvinist brethren do not entertain shall we say their wives when they are standing up.One is that it looks too much like dancing and the other may be that in fact they cannot stand up in more ways than one if they are given tae a secret drap o the cratur as we say in Scotland.That is one of the many ... This is a rich smorgasbord of culinary writing from an acknowledged master of the subject. It consists of short chapters on all sorts of food subjects, some expected, less so, with a trademark emphasis on the politics of food. One shortcoming: some of the pieces feel rather dated - in quite a few cases things have moved on here in England at least - and, as far as I can see, no dates are given for when a piece was first written or published. For this reason, less than the full 5 stars.

It consists of short chapters on all sorts of food subjects, some expected, less so, with a trademark emphasis on the politics of food.
