Having avidly read everything Dick Francis has ever written, I was saddened although sympathetic when he retired from writing, as he always said he would, on the death of his wife. Then he produced Under Orders, and I was so disappointed in it that I was ready never to buy another of his books again. So when I saw this book on the shelf of my only supplier of English books for many miles I dithered about whether to shell out the euros and give him one more chance. To be honest, it was curiosity about what difference having his son as co-author would make - along with a limited choice of books on the shelf - that persuaded me to give the book a try. And very glad I am too that I did. The book is back to the old Francis formula - innocent narrator plunged ... Read More:

Like many other reviewers here, I've read all of Dick Francis' earlier thrillers--many of them more than once, they're that good--and have always enjoyed the deft writing, crisp pace, vivid sense of the racing world, interesting characters, intricate plots, and sophisticated atmosphere. I was so looking forward to this one. Alas! this book was like a pale shadow of former glories. Gone is the deftness, vividness, sophistication, interest and intricacy. The writing's plodding, not to say dull. Poor old Sid Halley--who's popped up in 3 other books--is like a lumpen version of his former self, the plot goes all over the place, and the pace simply isn't there. It got so boring I simply gave up, and I've never done that with a Dick Francis.
But it also illuminated ... Read More:

Another thriller from this unique crime writer Dick Francis. Bonecrack a story about two fathers, one with lots of money who will move heaven and earth to give what ever his son wants. The other whilst in hospital will not trust his son to run the racing stables he owns. Then one of the fathers tries to take control of both sons.
Bonecrack grabs you from page one with mistaken identity and death threats, to the day to day nightmares they face. Just when you can see a glimmer of escape, it brings you back to reality with blackmail and threats to both horses and sons.
I could not put this book down, even when it came to cooking dinner for the family I would read in between peeling the potato and scraping the carrots. You must read this book .

This great novel can be read as a straightforward thriller with plenty of excitement, an unusual hero, a really unpleasant and thoroughly believable villain, and a finish of rare suspense. The writing is taught, economical and draws you into the story so that you feel completely involved with it.
But two elements make it much more than just a thriller. The love story running through all the blood and thunder is among the most touching I've ever read. And, as in all Dick Francis' books, the underlying theme is the triumph of the human spirit over evil and disaster, written without schmulz or overpainting. I've read all his thrillers more than once, and this is my top favourite.
