Max is a hedgehog, he wants to go to the park but to do that he has to cross the road safely. One problem, the traffic is terrible! He sees humans cross over safe and sound so why can't hedgehogs? He tries lots of things and one time he does get badly hurt on his head and his bottom, which makes him talk strangely. He says things like "Something bot me on the hittom" or "Hip! Hip! Roohay!" Finally, Max finds a solution after a long time so he and his family can go to the park unharmed.

Dick King Smith has a reputation for good books about animals, and although the Water Horse is a fantastical creature, the story is richly realistic in tone. In this well written short paperback for confident readers, this is the story of the Loch Ness monster from its hatching fom a giant Mermaid's purse and through it's early life with two children and Grandad Grumble. They care for the friendly little monster as it grows from a kitten-sized creature with a face resembling a horse into a considerably bigger beastie which needs a secret midnight transfer to an appropriate loch.

My 5 year old daughter thought the Sofie stories were really good and we, as adults, enjoyed reading them to her. Sophie is like a real little girl - not too PC - and my daughter could really identify with her. We also have the story tapes which are good. >>More Details |

This story is called The Sheep-Pig by dick king-smith. The main characters are: Babe the pig, Fly the sheep dog, Mr hogget the farmer, Mrs Hogget and Ma the old sick sheep.
It is set on farmer Hogget's farm. His farm is big with fields and in one of the fields is a flock of sheep. The sheep- pig is about a kind man called Mr hogget who took babe the orphaned pig back to his house from the funfair. When Babe came home with the farmer, Fly the sheep dog looked after him as her child. Soon babe wanted to be like his foster mother. The main character is Sophie who lives in a house with a farm. She likes animals and was born on December. Sophie taught puddle her dog how to be good and respond to his name. My favourite part was when Sophie entered a horse riding competition. I disliked it when Sophie smelt like pig because it sounds disgusting.

I brought this for my daughter and she loves it. It contains colorful pictures and a fantastic text which explains why all pigs really are beautiful!

The Guard Dog is written by famous award winning Dick King Smith. He wrote Babe, the Gallant Pig which won an award and was turned into a famous film which is really good. It is about a little dog without a home and with a squeaky, whiney, very annoying sound; when he does get one, he is sent to a Dogs Home, because of his horrible voice, where he can only stay for fourteen days; he does live happily ever after. I would rate this book 7/10 and I would recommend it to 6 - 8 year olds who like animals and happy endings for pets.

This is an absolutley FANTASTIC book, you may superficially think it is all about chickens and foxes, but look again... The three sisters, Ransom, Simms and Jeffries are "THE FOX-BUSTERS" and they will rid the farm of the long noses that have been the bane of their lives for so many years. An enjoyable book for all agegroups from 6year olds to parents reading it without their children, Smiths tale is full of all the best qualities, adventure daring and the obvious - good fighting evil. What more can you need from a book? I personaly love the small extra facts that Smith uses such as "foul language" and "flock law" whic just make a whole experience worth more! We loved this book. The mouse is called Wolf because his mum found a sheet from a piano book by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wolf, the mouse, listened to the owner of the house playing lots of piano music and soon learnt himself, taught by the lady of the house. We thought this book was great fun. by Luke Webb Age 9 of Stoke Sub Hamdon.
