Ward in this book only considers the possibility of finding new life within the solar system (including on Earth). He believes, with good reason, that intelligent life within the universe is sufficiently rare to not even consider projects like SETI worth embarking upon. (See his book, co-authored with Donald Brownlee, Rare Earth: Why Complex Life Is Uncommon in the Universe.) Ward and Brownlee have been widely attacked by astrobiologists for that book, but then, as Ward says in this book, a lot of lucrative funding for projects run by those astrobiologists, such as SETI, is at stake.
One of the most fascinating parts of the entire book is in considering the origin of life on Earth, particularly in relation to viruses. Viruses are not ... Read More:

I have used the Berlitz Cruise guides from the very first issue and they have now become my "bible" for keeping myself up to date when advising cruise passengers. The book is the most comprehensive I have found and is clearly laid out for new cruisers as well as experts such as myself. There are many other guide books on the market for cruising and many have tried to replicate the offerings of the Berlitz Guide without success. As the owner of one of the UK's leading cruise only agencies I fully endorse this book. Wayne Frieslander, Director, Cruises & Voyages Ltd.

A very comprehensive and up to date look at the cruise industry. I would certainly recommend it. You can find out a lot on the internet, but this is probably easier!

Peter Ward is one of the best writers in this genre - personally I rate him with Wilson, Dawkins and Gould - at least when it comes to the art of telling a good story, creating a good picture.
"On Methuselah's Trail" is one of the best books I have read about fossils and evolution. Not revolutionary, challenging or very complicated - just well written, charming, and - most important - it makes you want go right out in the bush to look for your own fossils!
