I have read each of the other Artemis Fowl books at least twice. But never once did I predict anything that happened in this book. It is brilliantly written and I read it in less than half a day, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!

Keep it simple, keep it fast and keep it jokey: Perfect entertainment for the mid-teens (and older).
I've enjoyed all the Artemis Fowl novels to date - and this latest, Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony, is no exception.
For those not in the know, Artemis is a teenage genius with a penchant for crime, and a big - very BIG - minder called Butler. He's been annoying the hell out of the fairy kingdom for years, although, having saved each other from disaster more than once, they have the sort of a love-hate relationship neither side would admit to: Holly, ex-LEPrecon (the fairy police), is his principle contact and Foley (the centaur) the technical wizardry supplier - oh, and there is a singularly repulsive character called ... An amazing story, let down by the lack of pace and flow. The story is very original, although not up there with the Alex Rider, Jason Steed, James Bond and Jimmy Coates, its better than Cody Banks.

Some people may be fooled into thinking that Eoin Colfer's creation of Artemis Fowl is an attempt to imitate Harry Potter. But whilst it is a fantasy adventure, aimed at kids but with crossover potential, there's very little to liken the two of them.
The main point being that Artemis Fowl is more about technology and gadgets than magic. True, there is magic, but fairy wings are petrol powered, boats explode with Semtex, CCTV is hacked into and leprechaun becomes LEP Recon. The duet of magic and gadget works.
Well, most of the time. Despite being a twenty-something with a decent head for electronics, even I found most of the terms and jargon being flung at me bewildering. Will a 12-year-old really understand what the half-life of Solinium means? ... Read More:

...And maybe the best one at that too. Colfer's writing is always a joy to read, his innovative sci-fi/fantasy blend presenting a fantastic backdrop for amazing characters. Artemis and Holly as a duo have been the true stars of the show since i read the first book years ago and i'm so glad to see the series is still going strong in this book. Mulch and Butler are of course fantastic in the comedic element they provide.
In The Opal Deception we also see the return of Opal Koboi. A fascinating villain, she represents a fair match for Artemis's amazing intelligence and as they bounce tricks and plans off each other we get a action-packed, tense thriller of a novel that i whipped through - a proper page turner!

In the first book of this series Colfer introduced us to the genius-criminal mind of Artemis Fowl. The enterprising teenager was able to steal a fair amount of gold from the fairies, in his quest to return his family to its proper place and recover his father. But we also got to see a more human side of Artemis and understand that he was not exactly as he was portraying himself to the rest of the world. In this book these traits start to come out more and more.
We know that Artewmis' father has disappeared in an accident a couple of year ago and that there have been no news about his situation. In this book we are taken back in time to presence the moment in which a group of Russians fish a man out of the water in the Arctic Circle. The man shows sever frostbite but is alive ... Read More:

Having borrowed the first Artemis Fowl novel (from a friend who implored me to read it), I'd never actually owned a copy. It didn't seem right to adore a book so much and not actually own one, so I faithfully visited Amazon.co.uk to set this to rights. When I saw that a graphic novel had been just been released for AF1 there really was no decision to make; it was as good as mine.
And what a terrific job Colfer and Co have made of this electrifying story by putting it into a comic strip format. The original novel was extremely fast paced and had an action film feel to it, yet the graphic novel has taken this premise and run with, very quickly!
The visuals suit the story perfectly; sharp, modern, funky and perceptive. The varying size and the scope of these images really ... Read More:

First of all let me say that this book saved me from a painfully long wait at the dealership where I took my wife's minivan for service. I expected this to take about an hour or so, and that is what I was told when I got there. I should know by now not to trust these estimates, since I ended up being there for three hours. It was the perfect amount of time to finish this book though, which I had started that morning at home. Colfer helped me feel as if the three hours were only one, and that is really something to applaud!
Artemis' father is recovering in a hospital in Helsinki, from his shipwreck in the Arctic and further kidnapping by the Russian mafia. More important, he is a changed man, that has stopped considering gold to be the ultimate goal and wants to focus on his family instead. This ... Read More:

I'd loved everything I'd read by Eoin Colfer so I was intrigued to find what I hope is the start of a new series. It lived up to expectations and I raced through it, loving every minute. Eoin Colfer's style of writing just keeps me gripped and Half Moon Investigations was no dissapointment. I really hope it is the start of a series cause I can't wait to get stuck into the next case!
