You may, like me, have first come accross the Box of Delights when it was dramatised by the BBC in the early 1980s, and shown at Christmas virtually every year that decade! It was through a fit of nostalgia about this that I sought out the book, and I have certainly not been disappointed.
Very simply the main character of the story is entrusted a magical box, which he endeavours to hide from a "gang of crooks" who also have an interest in the dark arts and the powers of the box. Masefield charts the adventures of 12(ish) year old Kay Harker, and those "blessed Joneses" (Kay's words, not mine!) over the four days leading up to Christmas in 1935, setting a good vs evil story against the background of going swift and going small, adventures ... I've fallen in love with this book and I think you will too. First read when I was ten, I still sneak a look every now and again at aged 24! It's evocative in every sense; I'm running along with Amy, past the woodland animals, cheeks rosy from the fresh air, soft green moss under my bare feet. And I can even smell old seaweedy Fairy Crustacea. Each page brings happy memories of my childhood and never fails to be anything other than uplifting when read over and over again. I certainly recommend buying this book, if not for the children in your life, then for yourself.

This was my absolute favourite book as a child. I was transported away to a land of magical fairytale with some quite gruesome and quite frightening occurences. I was utterly gripped - so much so the stories have stuck in my memory since.
Tonight I dug out my well-worn copy (swearing to buy a new edition as most of the pages are falling out) and read Prince Ivan, the Witch Baby and the Little Sister of the Sun to my four-year-old son. He was enchanted, entranced and captivated. He's completely bewitched by the tale.
Amazing to think this was first published in 1916 and yet still has the power to capture a child's imagination.
The stories are quite frightening in parts and I'd recomend exercising cautious judgement ... Read More:
