Starting off with anarchy approaching Gotham, Batman as an older man finds himself pulled back into vigilante activities with a variety of mean, ugly threats to be dealt with.

The art & the writing in this are excellent & this is a really gripping read. This is recommended even if you aren't a big graphic novel fan, as the action pulls you in and the story is very compelling. A great read.

First off: This review is only for comic book noobs, like myself!

I was recommended 2 comics to start me off on the road of comic reading, The Watchmen and Batman: Year One (due to the Batman Begins film being loosely based around this book). I read Batman first as it's much shorter, and wow, I feel like I've missed out on another world all these years! I was really suprised that the film was glammed up in comparison to at least this comic. It's very dark and Gotham really is messed up!

I almost couldn't put it down. The art work was great to look at and told a lot of the story that wasn't told in writing. I'm not sure if all comics are this clever, but I was impressed with the subtle story telling of the artwork.

This is one of my favourite graphic novels. Utterly fantastic and visually stunning. Even if you are not a reader of graphic novels, any traditional crime fan would be pulled into Frank Millers world of hard cases, hitmen, dames and hookers. The men are big and burly, the women are so hot and curvy, and its all conveyed perfectly in harsh black and white artwork. Its like traditional film noir on the page.

This is the first in the series of Sin city, and the protagonist is the incredible Marv, hulking street fighter and tough guy with a "condition." He can't believe his luck when he meets a beautiful woman called Goldie...But it's not to last, and she ends up murdered. Then Marv is hot on the trail of her killers, and blood splattered vengeance ... Read More:

I, like many people I would guess, bought this novel after seeing the film. The first thing that struck me is how closely the film-makers stuck to the source material. There are several lines and scenes that have been duplicated to the letter in the film and the visual imagery is just as stunning in both adaptations.
There are some small changes between the book and the film e.g. everyone is totally naked apart from the cloak in the book but differences such as these are easily explained I would think i.e. the film-makers may have had a problem with 300 sets of male genitals being on screen for 90 minutes!
As has already been stated, this is not true to the history of the real event and never once has it claimed to be. Consequently, all you pendants out there ... Read More:

Having read the numerous mixed reviews of this book, i decided to buy it and make my own mind up about this hugely controversial series. So here are my thoughts:
As many other reviewers have noted, the first thing this Graphic Novel possesses is fantastic artwork. Jim Lee has followed up his impeccable work in Batman: Hush with more of the same, from the luscious Vicky Vale to the awe-inspiring Batcave - simply incredible.
The story is a different matter however, as it is radically different from anything we've ever seen before. Frank Miller portrays the Caped Crusader as being on the brink of insanity and relishing being 'The Goddamn Batman!' as he mercilessly beats the living daylights out of numerous criminals, mentally and physically abuses Dick Grayson (the boy who ... I like Frank Millers "Dark Knight Returns", and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" is different but equally brilliant. The story brings in the whole DC universe, like Lex Luthor, Superman, Green Lantern and so on. But also less widely known like the Atom, Flash, Brainac, Captain Marvel, the Question, Wonder Woman and a new Supergirl. And the Bottle City of Kandor. I think all of this is very well done, especially as I read these comics as a child.

The graphics are splendid and done in Millers personal style, and worth checking out even if you're not totally into the superhero genre.

The story: Lex Luthor and Brainac have taken control of Earth and subdued the superheroes. And Batman rises against them.

Recommended to everyone interested in comics! ... Read More:

Once again Frank Miller knocks it out of the park in this, the 3rd Sin City installment.
This is a welcome return for some characters, namely Dwight from Dame to Kill for, and the girls from Old Town, and the evil Manute (big, creepy guy that he is!) Dwight is out to put a stop to Jacky-Boy's drunken violence, but he gets whole lot more than he bargained for, when the voluptous Gail steps in. Theres some rough justice, Old Town style, and a fantastic showcase for deadly little Miho and some suprisingly funny use of shruiken! Then things get a whole lot worse, with the discovery of the "Atom Bomb," turns out Jacky-boy was kinda important! Another great crime noir from Miller, with all the amazing characteristics you expect from Sin City. The black and white art is sharp as ever and perfectly ... Read More:

The first Sin City book was incredible, I've never read anything like it. So, how come the next book is such a flop? Firstly, all the characters are a bit dull, none of them have the charm that Marv did in the first book. This being set before and during the events of the first book, Marv makes a cameo appearance, but you never get to hear his thoughts during the book, which is what made him such an interesting character.

The plot is as flat as the characters. The first book has you constantly wondering what's going to happen, and could easily be read in one sitting, you just don't get bored enough to put it down. This time, however, you think nothing of putting it on the shelf and returning to it later, when you have the free time. It just doesn't draw you in as well.

When I started reading "Family Values," Book 5 of Frank Miller's "Sin City" series, I found myself wondering why Dwight keeps getting to be the narrator-protagonist of the comic noir stories. Then I remembered that Marv and Hartigan are both dead, so it means it is either Dwight or somebody new and Miller will have to get to the latter sooner or later. But for the third time in the first five books, once again Dwight is the man.

Dwight shows up at Poppa's Olympian Palace, an old fashioned diner (you know the type; it looks like you could put it on wheels and hitch it to a train as a cheap dinner car) driving a VW Beetle (hey, it is a German car, so what is your complaint? Besides, you can always trade up). The place is riddled with bullets and whatever happened there Dwight is interested, and ... Read More:

Having loved the film, it was only a matter of time before I delved into the graphic form of frank miller's sin city. I started with that yellow bastard, knowing the plot for the first book (The hard goodbye) inside out. Although this is in fact book 4 it is still a great place to start, the story which I wont go into detail about doesn't really connect with the other books in the series in any major way, so this is great as a stand alone novel too!

I was a big miller fan long before reading sin city, the dark knight returns being masterfully writen and 300 just blowing me away entirely. That yellow bastard though, for me topped them all. Miller's artwork is amazing, striking out from every page. The story, although no war & peace runs along at break neck speeds and the only down side I ... Read More:
