Well this one won't keep you awake at night. As a modest runner myself I found much of this book tedious, samey and uninspiring. A book like this is crying out for some dazzling insight into the process, the feeling, the elation of running but instead the reader just gets a not very interesting insight into the writer himself. I can't help but think that Murakami is just doing a walk-through here, scraping the barrel for a few old diary entries at the behest of his publisher. One run merges into another with only the degree of self-indulgence being the main distinguishing feature of each. More than anything I was surprised by the author's afterword in which he claimed to have honed and polished his work ad infinitum before finally releasing ... Read More:

The first of his novels I ever read. All I can say is it certainly left an impression. I am now a Murakami addict. A difficult novel to put into words, you'll just have to read it yourself.

I love this book - it takes me back to a place I'd forgotten. Youth, somewhere between 14 and 17yrs old. Murakami's unconnected way of looking at the world where everything is an adventure and nothing is sure. You leave motives and drives to adults and just get on with experiencing whatever comes your way. I don't think I've ever read anyone who writes in this mood and Murakami does it so well.

Not much to criticize about minimalism. (But I try...)

I guess Murakami goes on writing because his books continue to be published, and I guess his books continue to be published because people like me go on reading them, but Why do I go on reading them ?... I have no idea!

Reading this book is like listening to modern jazz - the grating kind which gets on your nerves! There is a long description of a television set which starts to produce a picture, although the set is unplugged. Then a sleeping girl somehow passes through the screen to a room on the other side....
A metaphor for death perhaps? Has technology taken over our lives to the extent it absorbs our ideas of spirituality? In any case, I found it jarring.

Then there ... Read More:

This is the second book I have read by this author after reading Norwegian Wood. I loved Norwegian Wood so I was really looking forward to this one. I was left a little disappointed.
The story follows Kafka who has run away from his father at the age of 15 and Nakata who as a result of an accident as a child, is mentally upset but has the ability to talk to cats.
He two stories seem very separate to begin with but slowly they begin to intertwine. Just as you begin to really enjoy one of the characters story's, you flick back to the other one and visa versa. The story started so strongly but lost its momentum part way through. I found the ending a little cliché but I still enjoyed the book. As with Norwegian Wood, the story stayed with me for a while afterwards.

This early novel stands halfway between the silliness of A Wild Sheep Chase and the heart-gripping humanity of Norwegian Wood. From the "young, beautiful, fat woman", like a Pink Rabbit leading the narrator through a slimy Underworld beneath a satirically alternative Tokyo to a revelation of his true self, to the shy librarian in the pre-industrial enclosure of the Town who yearns to recover her mind, Murakami shows his genius for creating individualised, sympathetic and often strong-minded female characters.
The narrator is classic Murakami, an averagely sensual man who with the same beautiful woman is sometimes impotent and sometimes manages it three times in a row, who never really understands what's going on around him, or what he's meant to be doing:
"'I wouldn't know,' seems to ... Read More:

This is a sweet little diary full of quotes, book covers and associated Murakami paraphernalia; liberally sprinkled with book histories, publishing dates and Japanese holidays.

It's very beautiful, and even comes in a dust jacket, and despite all there is to be enjoyed it still feels quite minimalist; the black and white and red styling complimenting the character of Murakami's novels perfectly.

From a bibliophile's point of view, it is certainly a valued item to keep alongside Murakami's wonderful novels. The only problem i can see is exactly why you would want to write in it at all!

The way Murakami writes is somewhat soothing if slightly bizarre. I loved this book but did feel a tad disappointed by the ending, however still worth the read. I would definitely recommend the follow up 'dance dance dance' which i prefered a little bit more than this one.

I've loved the books I've read by Murakami so far (Norwegian Wood, The Wild Sheep Chase, Dance, Dance, Dance and Kafka on the Shore), so my expectations were very high.

Although I love the poetic style of writing with lots of philosophical insight this book didn't quite do it for me.

The story line seemed simple: The male narrator K is in love with his best friend Sumire who is in love with Miu (a married woman) who's not in love with her. A lot of unrequited love in other words, but very strong friendships.

I like the first part of the book best when we're still in "the real world". It's amusing and original the way Sumire meets Miu and befriends her. It adds tension when Sumire discusses her love with K. There's also an interesting subplot dealing with K's casual relationship ... Read More:

A magical journey blending the fantastic and the realistic with more than a hint of film-noir. The mysterious rebirth of the Dolphin Hotel arouses the curiosity of the narrator and brings him to investigate. The simple start soon leads us into a world populated by rich and colourful characters and then the murders start.
Murukami's writing mines a rich vein of black humour and shows a contempt for the restrictons imposed by generic forms. His brilliant use of descriptive visual detail means he gives his characters a strong physical reality which is then distorted through surreal events and happenings. He writes about the development of relationships, teenage angst and death with a warmth and tenderness making this magical fable addictive and compelling.
