I bought this book on the back of 'What To Expect When You Are Expecting' and having borrowed this one from the library first. Both books are excellent, however I pre-ordered the 2008 edition, having read the 2004.

Why not 5 stars? Another review comments on the anglicising of the US law and support references, which is certainly the case in the 2004 edition What to Expect the First Year (What to Expect) but the 2008 edition is the American edition What to Expect the First Year and all the references are to the US system, some of which are completely different to UK, eg in the US the hospital files for your baby's birth certificate, here you register baby yourself. (A fairly obvious difference which is made very clear in hospital ... Read More:

This is a book to turn to for help on every aspect of parenting small children. It's well laid out, easy to find specific information, and concise without being dry. It covers everything from developmental stages, to healthy eating (including recipe ideas), childhood diseases, immunisation and first aid, helping your child develop ethics and good values. It's a hefty tome, reflecting a vast amount of knowledge gathered by the two authors over many years, and it was my crutch!

You may want to buy additional guides to parenting if you are struggling with a particular aspect of parenting, particularly the emotional and behavioural aspects, but this may be the one book that you turn to constantly until your child is 3.

I was given this book by a friend and can honestly say I so pleased that they gave it to me. You can skip sections and come back to areas that you are unsure of. It has questions by people in the same situation and answers them clearly.

I was concerned about a few of the myths surrounding the birth- for example my waters breaking whilst still at work or in the middle of the supermarket....but the book actually puts things in perspective.

Having a pregnancy that resulted in seeing a consultant for most of it, I have found this book useful as it gave more information on what was wrong than the consultant (To whom its all routine - and you always forget to ask when face to face) without scarying me.

I am sure there ... Read More:

What to Expect When You're Expecting

by: Arlene Eisenberg, Heidi E. Murkoff, Sandee E. Hathaway
March 04, 1996

I wish I hadn't bought this book. It has a lot of information, but
it's hard to sort out what's widely agreed on and what's just the
opinion of the book's authors. After doing a fair bit of research I
see that a lot is the latter, and some of it is pretty way out. There
is an assumption that you will do what your doctor (sic: not midwife)
says, without question, and even that you should assume you need
permission for everything, e.g. it says that you might like music
while you are in labour "if the doctor allows"! Typical of the tone is
that homebirth is scarcely mentioned except to scare you about what
might happen if you don't go to hospital soon enough (i.e. you don't
want an unplanned home birth, do you).

What to Expect When You're Expecting

by: Arlene Eisenberg, Heidi E. Murkoff, Sandee E. Hathaway
March 25, 1993

The drawback for this book is it clearly explains almost every possible complication. With the monthly format it is a lot to read at a time. The list of complications and possible symptoms each moth can be very daunting. Yet with all of that the book is also a great resource. It gives you many things to consider that you may never have thought of. It is much more comprehensive than many other pregnancy books. It has some nice charts in the back to help you keep track of weight, size and other notes for the Doctor's or Midwives. It also has a section for coping with pregnancy loss and also preparing for the next child. A good resource for any couple expecting a child. With over 12 Million copies sold this book now, in it's 3rd edition has been trusted by many people. The authors ... Read More:
