This book is about a couple of children in Australia who tell each other stories while waiting for the school bus. One day Anna starts a story about Hitler's daughter (who never existed in real life as far as we know), so it's a frame story. The story about Hitler's daughter raises all kinds of questions in the children who listen to it, e.g. are you responsible for your parents' acts? What would you do if your parents acted evilly? I found this aspect of the book very interesting.

This is such a great collection of stories, that we have given it to at least a dozen children of family and friends. The stories are clever, original and have enough magic for mystery, but not so much as to take away from the real hopes and fears of the characters. You can read them again and again and be delighted. A fantastic bedtime storybook.

My ballet-mad daughter got this for her 3rd birthday and is forever asking for it to be read to her. A nice bouncy story about achieving the impossible. Full of interesting descriptive prose - Josephine dances like "... the mist playing with the moon..." - that I wouldn't normally associate with children's books, but will extend their vocabularies. Easy to read out-loud, and really nice quirky illustrations. Recommended, especially for little girls who love pink!

This is an interesting book and if I remember nothing more than never leaving a patch of soil vacant then it has done me good!
Written with an Australian climate in mind, a lot of the content is not particularly relevant for the UK, but nevertheless it is interesting to read and I shall definitely never look at an area of idle soil, however small or large, without thinking of what I learned from Backyard Self Sufficiency.
