This is an excellent page-turner but as one reviewer has said, she has already forgotten the names of some of the characters. This can happen when there are so many stories going on at the same time and I, too, have forgotten some of the characters. It is also difficult to tell whether we have a heroine in this novel, for there is certainly no hero. Indeed, the author paints a somewhat bleak picture of men in general and the ones in her novel in particular. Even Theo, a kind and thoughtful man and one you feel has been included for convenience, a foil to the rogues, is something of a cypher. He certainly doesn't rise off the page as does Robert, a villain if ever there was one, or Robert's younger brother, James, around much of which the ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially as most of the action took place in my local area. The plot starts out quite slowly but the clever ending is really good.

I have read all of Varleys previous novels and this one is of similar first class quality.
She creates believable characters who show all their strengths and weaknesses. This one is a family saga and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the different characters and their problematic situations.
Great understanding,empathy and compassion.
I would recommend Varley if you like Joanna Trollope et al,she is an intelligent writer who treats her readers to a great story.

I bought this for my mum when she was going on holiday and she loved it so much that I had a read as well. There is a good mix of stories - some make you laugh and other's tug on the heartstrings. I loved the retro feel to the jacket and have it facing out on my book shelf!

This is the first book I have read by this author and I couldn't put it down. Victoria's revenge was fantastic, so well thought out. I can't wait to read more of her books.
