I bought the pair for my mum a year ago and they have ended up going round the whole family, young and old. Yes they have a nostalgic feel to them and it's food that nana used to make but thats what makes them so good, we are now having to live as if things are rationed, the meals that were made back then weren't full of e numbers and other nasty things (lets face it, we've all become alergic to them all anyway), they were wholesome and filling with no waste, after all I'm sure it's not only me that loves bubble and squeek on a monday with the sunday roast left overs. I cannot praise this lovely book too highly. It has all the David magic - exquisite prose, trenchant opinions and luscious recipes: some are of academic interest but nonetheless fascinating; most are dishes of simplicity but also subtlety and finesse. The closing essay 'Para Navidad' is perhaps one of the most perfect writings about food I have ever read. Congratulations too, to the book designer and the photographer. The beautiful cover is a true indicator of the delights within and Elizabeth David, who had a keen visual sense, would have loved the photographs which are not so much of cooked dishes but of simple, pure, beautiful ingredients that make you want to dash off to the kitchen and set to. `Add exciting and exotic flavours to your cooking with flair and creativity......
Features recipes from culinary traditions renowned for their sensational use of flavours - from Thailand and India through the Middle East to Mexico.'
Jill Norman is a respected food writer in her own right and was also involved with the late Elizabeth David's writings. She has numerous small dedicated books on this subject, but this volume is an invaluable `bible' on the use of herbs and spices and worthy of a place on any kitchen bookshelf.
Even the most experienced cooks might need some help from time to time and this book is the one you need!
So if `Zedoary' is new to your cookery vocabulary, as it was to mine - this IS the book for you!

A clear no-nonsense approach that covers all bases and would be ideal for the newbie house husband (if I'm at all typical of the species, that is). However, I do have a problem with the title as the book has nothing whatsoever to say on how to cook penguins, nor does it appear to be aimed at penguins as I have found that they mostly regurgitate their food no matter how well I prepare it.

Having never been to mainland Spain, we took this book along with our minimal knowledge of the language and its pronunciation. Staying in a place where nobody spoke English, it saved us from starvation, humiliation and resorting to catching the next flight home. Generally, the locals appreciated our attempts and despite a couple of slip ups, fun was had by all.
