For over forty years the James Bond movies have thrilled audiences worldwide. The twenty-second, `Quantum in Solace', is currently being filmed with Daniel Craig, the sixth actor to don the mantle of the super-spy. This book is coffee-table size, a lavish compendium of almost everything you wanted to know about Eon Productions' James Bond films and their connection with the books that spawned them.

This encyclopedia has the official blessing of producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and the authors were given unprecedented access to a vast library of still photographs.

There's a double-page spread on Ian Fleming and each of the actors who have played Bond, all containing interesting insights, many unfamiliar. ... Read More:

I enjoyed this book very much, though I found the first part(with Allan Armadale and Ozias Midwinter) rather slow going and often absurdly sentimental and lachrymose. But once we are introduced to Mother Oldershaw and Lydia Gwilt, the pace really picks up, everything becomes crisper, more exciting, more fun, with superb observations and a real feeling of suspense. Lydia is an amazing character--a real villain, but you also feel sorry for her. There is good in her but so much bitterness that it's drowned out the good, pretty much. I loved the way Collins presented her to us, through her letters and diaries--they are so immediate and strong.
I don't think the book as a whole is as good as the brilliant Woman in White or the Moonstone (Collins' ... Read More:

Books : Altered State: The Story of Ecstasy Culture and Acid House (Five star)

Altered State: The Story of Ecstasy Culture and Acid House (Five star)

by: Matthew Collin, John Godfrey
June 01, 1998

I just reread this (having first bought it whenever it came out, back in 1997, I think), and found it to be a very interesting history/analysis of raving in the UK. My reason for not giving it four stars is that the author makes no attempt to explain why ecstasy became so popular, so quickly in the UK when it had previously been available elsewhere (notably in the states). Did it have something to do with Britain at the time (in the latter years of a Thatcher government, with those awful licensing laws), or supply (people could just buy it here more easily)?
There may be a bit much made of the effect of individuals too (x did this and then y did that, as if they created changes themselves), but even so, most of those individuals were interesting.

Books : The Woman in White (Oxford World's Classics)

The Woman in White (Oxford World's Classics)

by: Wilkie Collins
April 02, 1998

This book was quite unlike any I had previously read. While it was written in 1859 it is still - almost 150 years later - a book as gripping as it presumably was all those years ago for Victorian and Edwardian readers brought up on such spooky classics as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dracula and Frankenstein.

Told in the form of letters and diaries of the different characters involved it unfolds bit by bit and keeps you guessing right up until the very end. Collins's characters seem to come alive and make a lasting impression. As a thriller it easily beats many modern-day thrillers and really does have an unequalled air of menace and threat. Despite its age it is immensely readable and is a true page turner. Simply a must!

Why only just? A few reasons really... Wizards of the Coast seem reticent to provide indexes in their D&D supplements. Why is this? I have absolutely no idea, other than they are in such a rush to put out product that they don't allow enough time for the compiling of indexes. Another thing is that the Magic Item Compendium is about three years overdue and, though obvious by its name, is not much more than a compilation of previous items from many other source books. It's not that this isn't necessary, but it feels like this sourcebook was put off in order to allow others to be released first (Weapons of Legacy springs to mind, for one).

Don't get me wrong, it's a great book, and has the feeling of a "pure" sourcebook, the sort that would be considered ... Read More:
