I read Urry's tourist gaze a couple of years ago when I first started studying tourism. His ideas offered a frame work that many tourism researchers refer to. It was very exciting for me then.
Since I first read the first edition, I have also read many criticisms against his thoughts. Urry acknowledges these criticisms but he still largely ignores these charges in this new book. That is puzzling to me. So, in the second edition of his "classic", Urry revises or more accurately, merely tinkers with his original tourist gaze ideas.
Tourism research today has moved towards tourism experiences. Urry seems to be stucked with his visual gazes. I therefore wonder why one should buy his second edition even though his examples ... Read More:

This book is a must for social policy students or anyone interested in issues affecting British society today. It combines sociological analysis of such areas as the family, education and deviance with comprehensive explanations of the political reforms which have changed the face of the welfare state over the last fifty years. Each chapter ends with a summary of the main points raised as well as recommedations for further reading and cross referencing. The glossary gives excellent definitions of some of the more complex jargon used. However, the book is generally easy to understand, well set out and very up to date with some useful information on New Labour's recent reforms of the NHS. Altogether a thoroughly good read which I highly recommend

As a second year undergraduate doing environmental politics, it is an extremely interesting and helpful book as it places environmental thought into a societal perspective. There is also a section on the BSE crisis which I've read through many times. The content is highly interesting and although the book is not very thick, it covers a load of material and presents the ideas of other authors too. Very insightful.
