Webster is scarcely known outside university departments and some enlightened secondary schools who have used him on A-level syllabuses. This is a pity...and a scandal. It means that he is vastly undervalued, if rated at all. His two main plays are great works of art and he is one of the very finest playwrights in existence. Read, and re-read.

The two tragedies in this collection (which also contains "The Devil's Law Case") are Webster at his finest, and "The Duchess of Malfi" stands as an unquestionable classic. The language is almost fetid in its power, dank with atmosphere and bestial allusions and it tells a story of the Duchess whose two brothers choose to destroy her rather than allow her to remarry. The play ends in madness, death and mistaken murders, amidst a whelter of confusion, regret and betrayal. Redemption seems a far more remote prospect in Webster's tragedies than it does in Shakespeare's, and these tragedies are more muscular, dirtier and bestial than Shakespeare's work. Well, lets just say that this revison book has been a life saver!!!!! I have just spent a year of being taught next to nothing by my technology teacher. He's also the assistant head teacher so hes constantly out of our lessons sorting problems etc out around the school! In our last lesson before going off on studyleave our other tech teacher was asking us questions in preparation for our exam and we knew absolutely nothing (apart from the odd girl who took Resistant Materials last year for gcse...). So in other words weve had to literally revise an entire years worth of mind boggling information!!!!
