This book is very well researched and thought through as you might expect from a respected scholar on sustainable agriculture. It is, I'm glad to say, very easy to read and not academic in style. It is a collection of essays that can be read independently, but they are well ordered and complentary so reading from cover to cover is easily done! This is a very informative read about agriculture, but it also covers issues like humanity's place in nature and is full of the character of the author.

This book is impressively discerning ! Urge everyone to read it... it gives us a very different perspective of environmental, cultural, social and economic facts of what we're used to see. Very well written with clear presentation of facts and stories.

This book brings together a lot of authors into one book. It deals with a number of themes, and has essays specific to both industrialised and developing country contexts. It also deals with social and agroecological perspectives. If you are familiar with Pretty's work this is of a similar vein, favouring agroecological perspectives and social and human factors and not bowing to neoliberal and neomercantalist views that are common in Europe. This is a good start for students, or a good progression for the interested lay man. If you want a less academic approach to the subject try 'Agri-culture' or 'The Earth only endures' by also Pretty.
