Although the Haggis Cafe in HIghland Fling will always have a place in my heart, the masterly way Katie has entwined the stories of the three women at the heart of this story has to make it my new best favourite. There are a host of memorable minor characters too, not least the very dishy Hugo...Loved it!

I bought this book after reading the reviews on here because I have discovered recently that I have a really strong interest in writing. I'd always thought writing was for a particular sort of person, the very talented, super-creative sorts who have characters and plots falling out of their ears. This book helped me to see that writing is for anyone who has the desire to write and that if you fancy having a go you should go for it.
The first few chapters had me laughing out loud with tears rolling down my face. It was such good fun, not a serious text book at all yet getting many serious points across. I wish I could write like that!
I also enjoyed the input from wide ranges of other authors, agents and publishers ... Read More:

This was a truly enjoyable read, very funny and cosy. I loved the descriptions of the barge and the atmosphere of the harbour. The Dutch background was also very true to life (I lived in The Netherlands for five years). A lovely escape this dreary summer!Finding Margo

Polly Cameron thirty something would be potter works as a waitress. She lives amid clutter and cats and normality. She is a lovely character with her oxfam clothes and her genuine kindness especially to drunken teenagers. This is one of Ffordes best novels the characters are well presented even the awfull jolly hockey sticks Melissa whose decor matches her food beige. Polly meets the rather stuffy David Locking-Hill and they are immediately attracted to each other, despite their differences. Polly is in her own way somewhat repressed, and this shows unconsciously in her work as a potter, an encounter with David changes all that and Polly begins to change her style as an artist. An enjoyable read.

I have read a lot of Katie Fforde books by now, and I found The Rose Revived an enjoyable read. The three women who become friends after meeting at an unconventional job interview for cleaning jobs, are each very different characters - all very likeable. They all have money troubles in common, and end up living on a narrowboat together for a time. Between them they set up their own cleaning business, though this isn't the main focus of the novel. Really, each young woman has to find her thing in life, which they do by the end of the book, along with a man of course! They all seem to be very good at problem solving too. Fforde does insightful detail and humour very well.

A brilliant read for all ages. I loved this book, as did my Grandmother. The tale is both heart warming and funny. I'm a big fan of Katie Fforde, and this didn't disappoint.

If you're reading a lightweight `30-something woman doesn't know where she's going in life' novel, you generally know what to expect. The plots are usually predictable, and not what keeps you interested; it's how the author and the characters get to the inevitable ending that counts. Judy Astley is a great example of an author who knows how to turn a predictable plot into a charming read through strong characterisation and sharp dialogue. On the evidence of Life Skills, Katie Fforde isn't. From the first page the reader can see what will happen on the last, and none of the characters or situations are interesting enough to make you care what happens in between. Realism also appears to be sadly absent from the book too. Lead character Julia begins the book as a ... Read More:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and can't understand why it has mixed reviews.
I have been to the Highlands and can picture the surroundings and appreciate that having a bottle of whisky in the house is a matter of course there like tea and coffee is in England.
I thought the characters in this book was another insight into how diverse peoples way of lives can be. I liked the way Jenny and Ross bickered at each other keeping their barriers up and lowering them at the end of this book. Good Read.

This is one of the first three of Fforde's books I have read and my favorite by far.
I felt that the story was in the realm of possibility - the hero wasn't Prince Charming, but yet you still wanted he and our heroine to get together in the end.
This book is both funny and romantic! I love the way katie fforde writes and this one was, in my opinion her best! I genuinly couldnt put it down!
