Having read my copy of "Pillars of The Earth" at least 4 times, I just had to get the follow-up.
Stainding over 1000 pages, its not a tome to pick on a whim, but its another superb travel through historical England. (Don't panick if you still haven't experienced the magnificent "Pillars", as the characters are a few generations on).
Any fans of historical fiction will love this tale of love, deceit and heart-ache. Throw in some meaty action, add some pestilence and suffering, and you're left with a book that will keep you enthralled and captivated.
I loved it. 5 stars once again for Follett!!

I personally loved this book. It is not a particularly (if at all) 'intellectual' book - it is a romance and thriller novel that spans so many pages it manages to find itself wound up as a tome of a book.
Nevertheless, if you are going on a trip or find yourself needing something to read, give this a try. It is not as difficult as it may appear, and, quite fun!

I picked this book up not really knowing what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised and was gripped from the very beginning - I must say the very first line of the story is probably among the most intriguing ever:
"The last camel collapsed at noon."
Great alternate spy/spycatcher chapter format to keep the chase alive and the pages turning, though I'm subtracting a point for some clumsy eroticism. I suppose that the spy thriller genre demands it, but I just cringe and feel like I'm reading Mills & Boone or something.
This was written for the 2nd World War prior to D-Day there were as much activities going around it - this was one of the piece involving the 'needle' whose name was Faber. Going about killing anyone who knows who he was and saw his face. Have to say Faber did go through hardship to survive in this chase from British intelligence. He eventually survice a ship wreck and met Lucy's family.
The woman that was part of this saved the war from hiding some important military secrets; the truth was not known to Hitler. Lucy had to battle her way with Faber persistence to get to a radio and trying to escape the island.
Last part of the book was great, very straight forward understanding of the plot with some twist and actions. Rate this 4 Star. ... Read More:

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan began on Christmas Eve 1979. The inhabitants of this geographically isolated land, rose up to defend their country. They armed themselves with whatever was on hand, gathered into loose formations and began to attack and sabotage the Soviet Union's personnel, installations, depots and transports with any available weapons. Scattered guerrilla bands, with fierce pride, and a tremendous ability to endure, fought against the far superior and more numerous Soviet forces and sophisticated weaponry.

Follett writes such brilliant stories. This is just engrossing. He writes such page turners. I absolutely love this book and I can't understand why it has not received far more reviews as it is so good.
