I was really captivated by this rich and eye-opening collection. Made up of short extracts from all the world's major religious traditions, it manages to combine depth of insight with both readability and a breadth that illustrates clearly an important strand within the faiths.

Whether through Empedocles' conception of himself as having been, in a previous incarnation, a `leaping, flying fish', or Chu-Hung's instruction to buy caged creatures solely for the purpose of releasing them again to the wild, the authors are concerned to show how an `animal welfare' impulse towards vegetarianism has long flourished in the faith traditions.
