I stumbled across this book after coming back from Mozambique, where I had visited the exact area which Ms. De Terán describes so lovingly in this book. And it is truly an extraordinary area (Ihla de Mozambique, Mossuril) - culturally, historically and geographically, and what Ms. De Terán has done in the area is admirable, and specially the descriptions of the Makua traditions are very valuable; Makua are a numerous and lively nation in Northern Mozambique of whom there has still been written too little. For just that the book is a great read, although Ms. Terán is clearly out to sell her project to sponsors. Nothing wrong with that though: Mossuril is poor, but at the same time one must not forget that other areas in the province of Nampula ... Read More:

I thought this book was great. Written with a real affection for the wonderful characters who welcome the author and her family into their village, it is entertaining but also accurate. Having helped a friend restore an Italian house, this account of rural italian life really rang true. The style may be eccentric, but that's part of its success and I was sad to reach the end of this life-enhancing book.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I was reading this book when I was taking a year out travelling and could appreciate Lisa's wonderlust and love of visiting different countries.
She has had such a full and wonderful if not scary life at times. Each page keeps you hooked. I think this book would appeal to those who enjoy travel or just for escapism...

Lisa St. Aubin de Teran has had an extraordinarily colourful life. She's had more husbands than I've had hot dinners and been to more countries than Marco Polo. I would say this book is a mixture of life story and wanderlust traveller, so you might be annoyed if you want a straight forward travel account. Personally I found her life story more interesting than her descriptions of trains and train stations. Her writing style is a little chaotic in places, you think you're in Italy and she suddenly mentions Mexico or the States, it can get a bit bewildering at times. But still, an enjoyable book that will give you itchy feet.
