Like many of Margaret Mahy's books this books is a treasure to brighten your life. Other reviewers have said most succinctly why, so I'll confine myself to saying that truly this is a book that you will look forward to reading to your child and your child will love too.

I bought this book for my two boys who are six and seven years old, it looked great to me. Unfortunately after reading a few of the stories my boys said the book was just plain boring! Maybe it would be better suited for girls??? there are so many lovely books out there and I liked the idea of having lots of different stories all in one book, but it didn't work this time !!!

This is a fantastically fun picture book! A brilliantly tongue twisting story which is great fun to read. The real joy of this book is in the illustrations though - they are energetic and effortless at the same time and complement the writing beautifully. My baby niece loved looking at the pictures and the older children loved spotting all the action on each page. A highly recommended read that you wont tire of!

This is a lovely gentle book written in rhyming text with a great rhythm. A lady and four children are taking two lively dogs down the track to the beach and they'll chase whatever comes along - they just want to play. It's evocative of family summer holidays and flip-flopping down to the beach with all the time in the world. The illustrations are fresh and appealing, especially the view over the bay where my children love spotting the 7 teeny goslings. We are a dog-free family, so I think it would go down even better in families who do walk exuberant dogs. Perfect for the 2+s.

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. The Seven Chinese Brothers was one of her picks.
The Seven Chinese Brothers is for children who are past the time when they are ... Read More:

I defy anyone not to be totally captivated by these delightful tales. Margaret Mahy has such a talent for writing stories that work on multiple levels, so that children and adults all find it interesting. I recently read the whole of "The Librarian and the Robbers" in church as a parable, and have previously used "The Great Piratical Rumbustification" in the same way. I have just bought two more copies - one from two girls under seven, and one for a retired librarian. Both were delighted.

This is an excellent book about a persistent witch and the problems of letting one into your house. It's easy and fun to read for all age groups and the illustrations are brilliant. It even has a recipe for gingerbread men in the back! I selfishly hogged the copy in my local library when I was about 4 years old. Now I'm 30 I've bought my own and it's still a great book.
