I cannot commend this book enough. In September of last year I tried the previous revision of this book. It was my first attempt at dieting as I, like most people, loved my food but as I was now in my thirties I could no longer eat anything I wanted without taking exercise and feel no effect. My waistline had grown steadily from a loose 32" to a really tight 34" (effectively 3 sizes) within around a 3 year period and I didn't want to go up another waist size and start making excuses about my double chin.

Beware. Not everyone on a low carb diet will find these recipes particularly low carb. There are many that include onions and flour (both have a very high GI). But in it's favour there are no Americanisms in sight, and at least the dishes taste wonderful!

I agree entirely with Mark's review of the 12 May 2007. The book starts well and then runs out of useful content very quickly. It's not a bad introduction to the basics of the low-carb/low-gi concepts and, fair enough, there are plenty of recipes.
However, I'm writing this review to declare my main gripe with the book which, after my trawl through the constant and repetitive sales pitch in the early chapters (why do people do this? I've already bought the book) has left me feeling pretty cheated. The reason is this: the 'diet' part of the book is made up of about 1/3 recipes from this book and 2/3 recipes from their other three books on the same/similar subjects. Easy to follow, it's all stuff you can prepare in a rush if you're lazy with cooking like I am. Even tells you what to go and get off the shelves in M&S if you're feeling extremely lazy. Most of it you can cook in a microwave. It also explains all the stuff about how if you keep carbs to a minimum your body goes into Ketosis or lypolysis - can't quite remember which but it basically means that you re-program body to start burning fat as it's main fuel source instead of carbs/sugar etc. Protein burns slowly where as carbs go through your system quickly. Therefore, you don't burn all of it and it turns in to fat and sits on your hips, arse, legs or wherever. If you are trying to follow a high protein diet this book is a must. It takes all the guesswork out and makes counting carbs too easy not to do, making the high protein low carb diet simple to follow and extremely successful. Excellent

I really like this book, mainly for the recipes - I hadn't actually realised at first that this was a low carb diet. The "science bit" is kept very much to a minimum, giving you the basic info you need to get going with the diet and enjoy the delicious foods. There are a whole range of recipes and having tried several they are really great and not at all like diet food. I haven't tried the full diet plan but incorporated some of the principles into my everyday diet. If you want to read all about low carb high protein diets then buy the New High Protein Diet by Charles Clark, but if you want to get going straight away and start cooking nice meals then this is the one for you.
