the book makes you feel that you are in the achual in the story when you get into it. it has a mixture of sad times happy times and even some funny times.

This is a superb novel to motivate reluctant (male) readers between the ages of 9 and 13. As usual, Morpurgo's story telling skills combine with excellent use of figurative language. Each chapter ends on a cliff-hanger and as the main character's name is Michael also, children wonder throughout whether or not it is autobiographical. The ending of the novel is bitter-sweet but apt and the classes that I have taught this to always enjoy it. From a teacher's point of view there are many resouces and activities- as is usual with Morpurgo's novels- that can be created and adapted from his text. The paper back edition has far more illustrations than the hard back and therefore, kids seem to prefer that copy.

This book is apsolututely brilliant! I couldn't put it down! Set in WW2, it is an exciting, but very sad story, of 2 brothers. A definite read for everyone! Morpurgo's best!!!

I am 10 years old and this book made me cry. It is the third book in my whole life that I have given 10/10. Everyone who reads this book will love it.
It is about a horse who went to the First World War in France and tells you all the horrors that he went through. A beautiful story about friendship and courage. >>More Details |

One morning David is awoken by his mother and he remembers that he was going to be sent away to the countryside. His mother takes him to the station where he sees all his friends and teachers who are also going. He arrives there nearly the last but someone else, Tucky, is last. Tony Tucker (also known as Tucky) is best friends with him. They are now like brothers as they are evacuated away to Devon, like all their other friends, from their homes and school in the big and busy city of London in the World War 2. They are the centre of attention for a while in the village but soon they are a little bit feared. They are staying with a nice couple, Jerry and Ann Reynolds.

Michael Morpurgo has written yet another brilliant story with 'The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips'.
It's the story of Lily Tregenza who, in 1943, lives on the family farm on the coast of Devon with her mum and grandfather. Her dad's away in the army. Lily has a cat called Tips, and when the family are forced to move from their home for several months while the army take over the area as a training ground Lily's beloved Tips runs away and gets left behind. Michael Morpurgo has once again enchanted me with this brilliant book. This is really a breath-taking read and I am not just exaggerating - it is actually splendid stuff! I would nominate this book for the Whitbread Award, although the author has won it many a times, or the Smarties Award.
The foundation stone of this story is the curse which came to the people of Samson, one of the Isles of Scilly, and how two young children - an inseparable pair of friends, a boy called Daniel and a girl called Gracie - and the supposedly mad Birdman of Bryher manage to redeem the curse some thirty years later. Alone on a Wide Wide Sea
I dont read books much, but then when i went to the library the librarian pointed this book out to me, so i took it home and started reading. I loved the first half of it, where Arthur Hobhouse's life story is told,he is evacuated to austrailia with his lucky key given to him by his sister Kitty, where he lives the rest of his life. However the second half isn't as good although it is interesting to find out what happenes to Allie (Arthurs Daughter) on her long voyage to find her Fathers long lost sister Kitty,it still has some tension to keep you interested but it can get a bit boring.
