What is this love affair the British have with the amiable Michael Palin? He comes across as a jolly nice chap, avuncular and inoffensive and yet this book, the only Palin book I've parted money for, is a load of old tosh. Palin goes on holiday. Palin meets lots of characters. Palin tries lots of new things. Big deal. Sadly none of it is remotely engaging or interesting in the slightest. I don't like to give up on books, but I found myself skipping chunks, as I was just bored by the whole thing. Blah, blah, blah...Please please please leave the travel writing to Theroux, Morris, Bryson, even Tim Moore and just make inoffensive NICE travel programmes. NO MORE WRITNG MICHAEL!

Having read to Pole to Pole & Full circle (as well as watching various bits of his programs courtesy of the history channel!) I thought this particular one would be another case of Mr Palin using a tawdry, overly ambitious idea and not much enjoying the result.

However I was wrong! As this was supposedly his first expedition it has that wonderful virgin territory quality and has all the joy and very little of the occasional malaise of his later trips. The sheer happiness Michael finds in visiting India and China (which he'd never visited before) and his teasing, slightly mocking tone towards Phileas Fogg's own experiences make this book an absolute joy to read.

And the best thing? Because this was written when the author was predominantly ... Read More:

This book is part pictorial part diary of the authors several journeys in countries which have part of the Himalayas in them-not the Himalaya as Palin pompously rechristens them.
The text is quite good but is only diary jottings without any real information on the country visited. There is far too much of the first pperson!
Where the book falls down completely are the picrures -far too many of Palin in them. The egotism of the man is unbelieable and he must be an insuferable travel companion The pictures without Palin are excellent.
There is no index to the book which is one that can not be recommended.

I was very sad at not being able to finish this book. It was one I had looked forward to reading for sometime. I admire Palin greatly and getting hold of this book made me return to the Python LPs to listen to them again. I have to say they are still laugh aloud good - better than I remember. As for the book - well it's a disappointment.

Very long and I made it to about halfway before losing the will to read on. The main disappointment is it failed to make the Python team seem anything other than grumpy young men. Palin talks about various projects but never describes how the sketches came about and what prompted them. The diary just assumes we know all about them and this makes it much more tedious than it should have been.

My problem with this book is you get the lowdown on intergroup politics and business wranglings, production technicalities etc but very little colourful anecdotal material about inspiration behind sketches and the like. Whole series can be covered with little more than a passing mention of any of the material involved! Very frustrating.

Michael Palin writes as he speaks, without pretension, and with a great deal of humor. These are his diaries - not initially meant for publication and thus full of honest, blunt observations regarding films, books, his own performances and the foibles of his fellow Pythons. Nobody escapes unscathed here, though I doubt anyone who Mr. Palin wrote about would dispute his conclusions.

The years 1969-1979 are some of the most amazing in Python history; they begin as Monty Python starts filming its first television series, and concludes as Life of Brian is released and there is backlash from the religious folks who don't understand the premise (and many of whom proudly state that they haven't even bothered to see the film they're condemning). Between these two seminal events are ... Read More:

Sahara by and large is a good but it dose get very repetitive. Palin in one of the best descriptive writes i know and you get a good fell for the country's.

Its just such a shame that its so respective and not in the slights bit addictive. Morocco is a good start but after Mauritania, and Senegal you just get fed up and want to read something else. Also missing out Egypt was a bit mistake. New Europe's a lot better. Only read this if are into travel books.
