This book quickly became a favourite with our 20 month old and it's good fun to read for us parents too (plenty of scope for funny voices etc). The story is immediately engaging and full of imagination, whilst the illustrations are quirky and interesting. The version we have has an accompanying audio book, read by Tamsin Greig, and my daughter adores listening to that also. Highly recommended

Our 4 year old son loves this book, and its one of the few we don't mind reading night after night! It manages to include science and history while making reference to the uncertainties of life (oh no it doesn't, oh yes it does). The pop ups are great and fairly sturdy (though we have broken ichthyostegas and the prickly dinosaur after about a years hard use). I wish there had been books like this when I was a kid.

Try explaining this story to a six year old and you may get tied up in knots. I know I did. But for all that, the children I read it with loved it. They loved the child, the dog, the storyline and the pictures, and they talked about it for weeks. In the story Rover treats the little girl as his pet, eventually becoming a unwitting hero.
