A fantastic read! I've recommended it everyone I know, and have now starting reading the rest of Patrick Gale's books. Rough Music is also excellent.

I bought this book because I heard it being discussed on the local radio in their weekly book review slot and the reviewer said he was actually reading it at the time and couldn't put it down. I found it equally compulsive and quite unusual in the fact that it was telling two stories of the same family and with a thirty year time gap, taking place mainly in the same holiday house in Cornwall. I did occasionally get a little confused about which story I was in, though the chapter titles do make it quite clear, and much as I wanted to keep reading, I found that a chapter at a time was the easiest way to keep it all clear in my mind. I had great sympathy with all the characters, except Sandy, who I felt was incredibly selfish and just pursuing his own ... Read More:

I would definately say that this book is a great read. It is about a young yet very articulate orphan named Sophie. By reading this book we get to see what the changes and ups and downs of a teenage girl's life as we watch her grow up throughout the novel. This novel is a great read because it captures the the deeper true feelings and emotions that a real girl would go through. This book is an eye opener as it deals with characters that what we in society would label as 'outcasts', but instead it gives us an insight into their world and it really widens and gives us different perspectives on life situations that we may have not have even seen before. I have to admit this book has some very deep themes at times and can prove to be alittle too much for ... Read More:

Another great read from Patrick Gale. A Sweet Obscurity is a tale of disparate adults all with their own needs and hope. Some are living in London and some in Cornwall - we know that somehow their lives will overlap and so we are compelled to read on...... At the heart of the book is Dido, a feisty nine year old who at times acts as parent to her stepmother/biological aunt Eliza. We know that there is some mystery about Dido's mother but we are kept in suspense until the very end. The plotting is ingeniously worked out and the whole work is a very satisfying read with a "feel good" ending.

I can understand why Gale has such a firm fan base even though he will never feature in the more prestigious literary prize lists. Based on my other book ... Read More:

Books : The Facts of Life

The Facts of Life

This is a book which takes you right to the middle of these characters and their lives. This is not the facts of life in its colloquial sense, this is about issues (murder, unrequited love, lust, mental breakdowns, free love, homosexuality, AIDS, the effects of war) that are perhaps hidden when we talk about the reality of life but are very real nonetheless.

Patrick Gale (PG) splits the story into two sections. The first sees Edward Pepper, a German exile who falls in love with his English, older female doctor, Sally. The setting is post-war but the author makes no date reference throughout this part of the story and the second. As a reader you get a real sense of time, era, place and atmosphere, without having to refer to dates and major events to quantify ... Read More:

I have really loved some of Patrick Gale's books, particularly Rough music, A Sweet obscurity and Notes from an Exhubition but this was a sad disappointment. Sad as the plot was beyond ridiculous, disappointing because it all started out so well with some very promising characters and themes but the co-incidences in the second half of the book defy all credibility and had me laughing out loud in disbelief. However it wont stop me reading more of this very entertaining author and I would reccommend him to anyone - just not this book!

A posh drama for everyone? Too posh for most! Again Gale has created an engaging story but yet again Gale has created characters we don't like enough to care about and too posh to be likable, there are characters that aren't posh but they are none too likable either. I'm not being elitist just realistic, Brideshead characters were all likeable not like these! Learn a lesson!

I enjoyed this book although the bit where the cats are involved (not going to spoil it for you) was very upsetting and the attitude of the women who just stood made me was equally upsetting. However, going back to the main plotline - this is an interesting book, though Deborah's husband's death I found slightly implausible. The love between Judith and Joanna was touching and the way that the three women become closer friends as they learn more about their pasts is delicately written and warming. However as with all Gale's books I found it hard to believe in the characters, or particularly care about them, and Gale's constant use of infidelity in all his novels is rather depressing. Can we please have a book from him in which people are faithful and are NICE to each other?

Synopsis from Amazon:
In this first novel, Dr Henry (Henrietta) Metcalfe falls for a hitch-hiker, Rufus. A psychiatrist and a teacher, both are intent on concealing their true identities. To complicate this comedy of sexual role reversal, Rufus is having an affair with Henry's brother, Hilary, who wants to be a father.

I don't really know what to make of Kansas in August. This is certaintly not the best Gale book I have read. The book seemed disjoined, with random characters flitting in and out of the story. There seemed no definite storyline, we just seemed to follow three character, Hilary, Henrietta and Rufus through odd events which distantly relate the characters to each other. I didn't like the ending, which I honestly was begging to come. I don't feel the story is ... Read More:

This is my second Patrick Gale book - my first was 'A Sweet Obscurity'. I began to feel quite annoyed with that one as I neared the end. I try not to judge a book by its cover though (pardon the pun) so thought I'd give him a go again. Unfortunately the annoyance began about 20 pages in with this one, but I like to see things through so I persevered. What a bunch of self-satisfied, smug characters. Yes I know they are meant to irk one a little, but really. There seemed to be no real 'feeling', a lack of responsibility from the characters themselves regarding their actions. It felt like a very staged, self-conscious book. Maybe the author is not a fan of children - as with Dido in A Sweet Obscurity, Iras is too precocious to be warmed to. Jasper, who is admittedly ...
