I find 'In Your Garden With Percy Thrower' and 'Month by Month' invaluable. They both tell me exactly what to do, month by month - yes, all 12 months, and by week too! Clearly laid out, without all the fuss and hype' found in most of the expensive-huge-glossy modern books. The plants are the ones I grew up with in the 1960's and 1970's and there are no nasty surprises. I can't recommend these two heartily enough in terms of value for money and hassle free gardening and they are both cheap and hardy enough to also keep a working copy of each in the greenhouse or shed.

This book is excellent for beginner gardeners. It give general advice at the beginning, information on pests and diseases plus a sowing and harvesting chart. There is an alphabetical guide to different vegetables and fruit including soil preparation, seed sowing, planting, cultivation and harvesting. The gardening book I refer to the most.
