After a friend lent me the first of the Grace series I got hooked. I bought 2 and 3 they just got better every time. I could not wait for number four. Alas I felt a bit let down. I found it hard to get into and the end was not as powerful as 'Not dead enough', but it had it's moments. But having said that, I cant wait for the next insalment.

Great story, highly engaging. I struggled with The Dreaming Void a little as I was in the wrong mindset - I wanted to see what had become of the Commonwealth characters, not this backward Edeard. It was a slow book until the final chapters...
Not so with this one. Edeard's development and a couple of plot twists in the Commonwealth make for a real page-turner.
I have been reading mostly Banks, Reynolds and Hamilton sci-fi in the last few years and its easy to become spoiled... It's only when you go back to reading the truly derivative space opera like the Saga of Seven Suns or The Dread Empire trilogy that you realise what masters the aforementioned gentlemen are.
I love this book, so I'm delighted when my 20 month old daughter demands "pirates" at bedtime (she's still a bit young to understand the whole story, so I know this one will be around for another year or two). She's very quickly become enchanted with the story -- both the wonderful story and language and the great illustrations. It's a firm favourite in our house and has been extremely popular when I've given it as a gift.

This book was passed to me by my Mum who claimed that it was "un-put-downable". I read the book in a matter of hours and must say it is one of the best books I have picked up in a long time. I have never read Peter James before but am now halfway through the second book. In this book, Michael Harrison is left in a life or death situation after four of his friends wind up dead after a Stag night prank gone wrong. The lead detective Roy Grace is a fantastic character and I think he is my new lead hero. Cannot reccomend this book highly enough. The book was fresh and new and the story line gripping and a complete page turner. Peter James has me hook line and sinker.

I picked this book up after rattling through the Pandora's Star/Judas unchained series, which I loved.
This book is written in a very similar manner, and is similarly entertaining.
There are 2 differing strand styles, one being high tech, set in the commonwealth 1500 years after the events of the books mentioned above. The other strand is more fantasy style, which I actually really enjoyed - when I hit the first chapter like this, I thought I would struggle with it, but it was pretty good.
Like his other work Hamilton does an excellent job of painting interesting characters that you care about - I feel this is one of his main strengths, and it comes through strongly here.
Anyone who is a fan of Peter Jame's creation "Roy Grace" will love this!
I can understand that this isn't to everyone's taste, what a boring world it would make if we all liked the same however I found some of the reviews harsh and unfair.
Roy Grace is a fantastic characters and the people who surround him in his adventures are superb too. James' descriptions are so great, it's like being there, like the first in the series and the next one, I could not put this down.
I can't wait for the 5th to come out in June 09.
Enjoy

Well TC stands for Tony Curtis but could also be used for Top Cat & either would fit Mr Curtis.
He has had the most incredible life & is one of the few who are still around to tell their tale of life at the height of what pleasuures the free Western way of life could offer.
Just reading it makes you feel tired & also rather envious although he certainly didn't have an easy life given his background.
It's a story of grit, wit, pleasure & pain; it's pretty well written in a very approachable style & would make a great gift for someone who may be a fan but not an avid reader.

Compared to 'Dead Simple', the first Roy Grace book, 'Looking Good Dead' is not quite as gripping in my opinion, until the pace picks up half way through. Still well worth reading though, if only to keep up with Grace's personal life - the sub plot behind the main story.
Easy to read, with lots of short chapters (like scenes from a film almost). I look forward to the next book 'Not Dead Enough'.

As a life long Londoner and a person well read in history this book was just up my street.
It was a well written book packed with all sorts of fascinating details. For the most part I enjoyed reading it although it could occasionally be long winded and tedious.
